Paul, the German octopus is well-known around the world for his remarkable ability to predict the outcome of German games in the World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

Mr. Paul, residing at Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany, has predicted Germany´s victory in the game against England by choosing
a mussel from a glass box with the German flag instead of a glass box with the England flag (see the picture below).

Paul has also rightly predicted Germany´s first round victories over Ghana and Australia as well as Germany´s defeat against Serbia.

Recently, he has been also right with his prediction of Germany´s victory over Argentine.

Till now he is always loyal to his country Germany.

But what happens, when he fails with his prediction about the outcome of the upcoming semi-final game between Germany and Spain ?

What to do with Paul, the German, when Spain…wins ?

Paul, be concentrating and predict right now !
If not, here are 3 your punishments. You can choose one of them !

Hey why all the squid recipes?

I go away for a month and you guys can't tell the difference between squid and Octopus?

Octopus has a much better taste if cooked correctly, or raw.

If Paul was at my house, We could make a whole meal

Octopus balls (takoyaki) as an appetizer while we sit around with a few beers before eating.

# 1 2/3 cup flour
# 2 1/2 cup dashi soup
# 2 eggs
# 1/2 lb. boiled octopus, cut into bite-size pieces
# 1/4 cup chopped green onion
# 1/4 cup dried sakura ebi (red shrimp)
# 1/4 cup chopped pickled red ginger
# *For toppings:
# katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes)
# aonori (green seaweed powder)
# Worcestershire sauce or takoyaki sauce

Mix flour, dashi soup, and eggs in a bowl to make batter. Thickness of the batter should be like potage soup. Put oil inside cups of a takoyaki grill pan. Pour batter into the cups to the full. Put octopus, red ginger, and green onion in each hole. Grill takoyaki balls, turning with a pick. When takoyaki become rounds and brown, remove them from the pan and place in a plate. Put sauce on takoyaki and sprinkle bonito flakes and aonori on the top.

And loves Octopus.

Although, raw, it does give me heartburn. Which means I take a antacid prior to indulging.

I don't have any Octopus dessert recipes. But they do have octopus ice cream in Japan. It didn't sound appealing so I never tried it.

Gun Grape,

Have you ever tried Korean style live octopus? I have yet to have the pleasure, but for some bizarre reason, really want to.

Gun Grape,

No I haven't.

I've seen it served 2 different ways.

The first is pretty tame. Tentacles cut off a live octopus. Then served in a bowl with a little lemon on the side and hot sauce for dipping.

The second is baby octopus served live in a bowl of water with a bowl of hot sauce for dipping.

When I saw the gentleman at the next table pealing tentacles off his face and stuffing them in his mouth I sort of lost an appetite for trying the dish.

Its one of those dishes like Balut. Cannot get past the looks.

Spain is now trying to get Paul extradited from Germany, after he correctly predicted the Spain - Germany game. Under police protection.

Its the second way that I want to try, there are a few restaurants here that will serve the first way, but it doesn't strike me as quite as adventurous as actually fighting down a live baby octopus. Of course, I don't see myself catching a flight to Seoul just for the pleasure. I'm with you on Balut though, I don't think I could bring myself to do it. There isn't much that I wouldn't try once, but that is apparently where I draw the line.

What to do with Paul, the German, when Spain wins the upcoming semi-final ?

Paul was actually born in England, and seeing all these cruel designs for such a nice creature, Spain does very well to offer politycal asylum.

He is a genious! He just picked Spain to win the final. ;)

German Zeitung Today (09.07.2010) :

Is PAUL really in danger ?
Yoh ! He needs Bodyguards !

After Spanien´s victory 1-0 over Germany the spanish premier Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapate has recently said during an press interview :
“ We are very worried about PAUL.”
Industry minister Miguel Sebastian even suggested that PAUL should have to be brought to the Iberian penninsula for security reasons.
Minister for Environment, Elena Espinosa, said even bluntly: “ so the Germans could not eat him….”

Although there are currently no indications of possible attacks on PAUL, the Sealife in Oberhausen has however increased the safety precautions !
Stefan Porwoll, manager of the aquarium , said recently to the press : “ we have now an employee, whose responsibility is taking care of PAUL during the daily opening time. "

Maybe an ideal close-protection job for ex-Navy-SEAL with excellent diving skill (in...Aquarium!) ?

Gun Grape,

An over-rated experience.

It's akin to swallowing goldfish in one's collge days when you're drunk as hell and just want to do something crazy.

Only problem is that if you actually acquire a taste for it, you'd rather eat it than just about anything else. Mix in a little bit of Ko****ang paste with vinger, seasme oil, sugar (Cho-Jang) and use that as a dipping sauce.

Only problem is those suckers tend to stick to your throat as you swallow so more than a few have died of suffocation while eating the suckers.

Put it in your mouth, chew like crazy until you've grinded it up very fine and swallow fast.

This is also a more pleasant experience when you have a caucasian woman with you and go eeeeeeewwwww" and make funny faces as you chew it. :))

Mods, a question.

Why is 'Ko****ang' censored?

I noticed it in Gunny's post and I tried spelling it a bit differently but it's still blanked out....LoL.

Eight is enough: Octopus retires

BERLIN -- No more World Cup, no more octopus oracle.

Paul, the octopus who became a pop culture sensation by correctly predicting the outcome of as many World Cup matches as he has legs -- all seven of Germany's games plus the Spain-Netherlands final -- is going to retire.

The intuitive invertebrate will "step back from the official oracle business," Tanja Munzig, a spokeswoman for the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, told AP Television News.

"He won't give any more oracle predictions -- either in football, nor in politics, lifestyle or economy," she said. "Paul will get back to his former job, namely making children laugh."

However, Paul took one last curtain call on Monday. Aquarium employees presented the octopus with a golden cup -- similar to the official World Cup trophy.

Although the cup was garnished with three mussels, Paul ignored it for several minutes as it was lowered into his tank.

He finally picked off one mussel and devoured it in front of television cameras.

Paul won worldwide attention as he called all of Germany's games correctly -- including its semifinal defeat by Spain. He crowned his career by forecasting correctly that Spain would beat the Netherlands in Sunday's final.

Paul died this week from natural causes btw. His remains have been cremated and his urn will be part of a memorial to be constructed to his legacy at Sea Life Oberhausen.
