(NewsCore) - Iran's Revolutionary Guards are willing to provide a military escort to cargo ships trying to break Israel's blockade of Gaza, a spokesman for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was quoted as saying by Iranian news agency Mehr on Sunday.
"Iran's navy forces are ready to escort the peace flotilla to Gaza with all their powers and capabilities," Ali Shirazi, Khamenei's representative inside the Revolutionary Guards, reportedly said.
The move came just a day after Turkey's prime minister was reportedly considering joining an aid flotilla and offering the support of the Turkish Navy to protect future missions from Israeli interference.
The presence of a naval force from either country would likely be seen by Israel as a highly provocative move. The Jewish state claims it has a right under international law to intercept ships attempting to break the blockade it imposes on Gaza.
When the possibility of military support being offered to aid flotillas by other nations was posed to Mark Regev, spokesman for the Israeli prime minister, he said such a prospect was not a "realistic scenario" and dismissed it.
"Some of these reports must be taken with a grain of salt ... I am not sure that is a realistic scenario," he told Sky News.
"I prefer that we sort these things out peacefully. Nobody wants any saber-rattling. It does not do any good."
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement, which controls Gaza, hailed Sunday the prospect of more foreign aid ships attempting to break Israel's blockade.
"We condemn the continuing policy of terrorism implemented by Israel against the Palestinian people and activists for peace and freedom," Hamas said in a statement released from its base in exile in the Syrian capital Damascus.
The group also "warmly" saluted the foreign activists who were intercepted Saturday by Israeli forces attempting to deliver aid to Gaza.
Israel was Sunday in the process of deporting those 19 activists and journalists who were arrested by its troops. Seven foreign nationals were deported to Jordan earlier in the day.
The operation followed a raid on an aid flotilla last Monday that left nine activists dead and sparked international condemnation of the Israel Defense Forces.

They would be insane to put a ship anywhere near Israeli waters; totally insane. Can't think of many people matter who would feel bad if Israel put a poorly armed IRIN frigate or two under. Can see the Turkish threat of doing it and the problems that might cause politically; none of those exist here.
Seems like the IRI is mad people aren't paying attention to them right now :(
