  • Worlds oldest whisky

    Well Col , are you buying a few bottles ;)

    A Scottish whisky firm on Thursday unveiled bottles of what it claims is the oldest single malt whisky in the world, having spent the best part of a century inside an oak barrel.

    Gordon and MacPhail's Mortlach 70-Year-Old Speyside was sampled at a launch party in Edinburgh Castle, where it was escorted through the doors by pipers and a military escort.

    "It matured for 70 years in the cask and that is what makes it the oldest whisky in the world," a spokeswoman for Gordon and MacPhail told AFP.

    The whisky was filled into its cask on October 15, 1938 by the grandfather of the company's managing directors David and Michael Urquhart.

    There will only be 54 full-size bottles priced at 10,000 pounds each, with another 162 smaller bottles on sale for 2,000 pounds.

    The limited edition malt was matured in a former sherry hogshead cask made from Spanish oak. It has been bottled in a "tear shaped, hand-blown" crystal decanter with a silver stopper.

    Whisky taster Charles MacLean described the single malt as "a delicate, fresh, vital, fruity whisky, with unusual attributes of waxiness and smokiness".

    "It's the oldest cask of whisky that, in my knowledge, has ever been bottled," he said. "The spirit and the wood have inter-reacted beautifully over this long period of time.

      These cigars would go really good with that whisky.

        does the waxiness and smokiness come from the wooden barrel disolving for 70 years?

        I kid, but I don't get the point of alcohol tho, cant stand the taste myself

          You're not married, are you.

              Man, I'd love to buy a bottle of that, unfortunately, I just don't have the coin. I'll have to settle for another bottle of Irish. Round of Bushmills 10 Single Malt, anybody?
              Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

                  For those unrefined people that don't know how to drink such a fine single malt. I offer some suggestions as a public service

                  Whisky Sour

                  * 3 measures Scotch.
                  * Juice of half a lemon.
                  * 1/2 teaspoonful of sugar.
                  * Add ice.
                  * Shake well.
                  * Serve with soda.

                  Godfather

                  * 2 measures Scotch.
                  * 1 measure Ameretto.
                  * Add ice.

                  Highland Cooler

                  * 1 teaspoonful of powdered sugar.
                  * Juice of half a lemon.
                  * 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters.
                  * 1 measure Scotch.
                  * 1 lump of ice.
                  * Mix and add ginger ale.

                  At that age its probably really good for cooking too. What flavor it would add to this recipe. Yummy

                  Lamb Chops with Fresh Figs and Whisky

                  Serves 2 - serve on a bed of barley with winter cherries
                  4-6 baby lamb chops, 1½ tbs olive oil, 1tsp butter, 1tbs chopped shallot, 1 clove garlic chopped, 1½tsp coarsely ground black pepper, ½tsp red peppercorns, 1¼ quart cups very rich veal stock, ¼ cup single malt, 4 fresh figs (carefully peeled and quartered at room temperature), 4 rosemary stalks, ½ cup dried cherries (soaked in 6 tbs of slightly warmed whisky for 1 hour), 1/3 cup medium scotch barley, 1½ cups water
                  Bring 1½ cups of water to boil, add barley and ½ cup veal stock, cover and simmer 45 mins/until all liquid is absorbed.
                  Stir in soaked cherries and peppercorns, reserving 15 cherries for lamb dish, cover.
                  Saute shallot and garlic in oil and butter over low heat. When soft, remove half. Raise heat to medium, add chops and cook for 3 mins on each side.
                  Lower heat, add ¾ cup veal stock, black pepper and whisky.
                  Remove chops and cover, simmer sauce, add salt to taste, add 15 dried cherries and reduce sauce by about 1/3rd.
                  Season barley, arrange on plates, arrange chops and figs on barley bed, spoon sauce over, garnish with rosemary stalks.

                        IMO this whisky would be placed in a special clear glass, and sprinkled with a drop of water to bring out it's flavor. Then sipped thoughtfully. Blended scotch is suitable for mixers and cooking. IMO it would be a crime to add anything more than a little water to this antique nectar.

                          I wouldn't even add the water. I'd go traditional, and take a little pebble from the creek. That's where "On the Rocks" originated from.

                            But this is something special. Sprite would work better.
