  • HMS Warspite

    Battleship lovers!

Now that the greeting is done with I think we should pay tribute to one of the best.

I am a massive fan of the Yamato's and Iowa's but I think us BB lovers should pay tribute to one of the Veterans.

HMS Warspite was in the thick of it since Jutland. Took damage in WW1 and carried on to shoot her way through WW2.

Why the Brits didnt keep her as a museum ship is beyond me. One of the best arguments against recycling that I know.

If any of you guys can post some photoes of this fighting girl that will be awesome.

    Thanks.

            Warspite in combat

Here are two more, the Warspite hammering the Normany Beachhead (note that X turret is not in use, a casualty from the damage sustained earlier in the Med.), and the painting by Irwin Bevan of Warpite during the Battle of Jutland at the "Windy Corner" in 1916

*First form of modern plastic surgury performed on one of her sailors after a gunnery accident.;)

Walter sustained terrible facial injuries including the loss of upper and lower eyelids while manning the guns aboard HMS Warspite in 1916.

In 1917 he was treated by Sir Harold Gillies – the first man to use skin grafts from undamaged areas on the body – and know as ‘the father of plastic surgery’.

London-based Gillies opened a specialist ward for the treatment of the facially-wounded at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup, Kent.

Walter Yeo is thought to be the first patient to benefit from his newly-developed technique – a form of skin grafting called ‘tubed pedical’.

The young sailor, of Plymouth, Devon, was given new eyelids with a ‘mask’ of skin grafted across his face and eyes.

As a kid I was always drawing HMS Warspite. Just something about her that make her the iconic image of the Battleship in my mind. I think its that towering forward superstructure. It realy is such a shame that none of teh RN's battleships were preserved. :(

                Regards

HMS Warspite is one of my favorite ships in all of history. If there ever was a BB that the UK should have kept as a museum, WARSPITE was it!

                            Nice pics guys.

I have to admit that when I first saw pictures of the Warspite I thought she was a heavy cruiser.

I have always got the impression that the Warspite was a rough and ready ship. She could get any job done but she would burp and fart her way along as she did.

She also looks like she nearly has a 'tumblehome' (is that the right word?) hull with the backward leaning bow.

@Wisconsin: What is the significance of the post???

I believe the post is where she grounded and was broken-up onsite in a final defiant FU to everyone who tried to kill her off.
