-have you ran windows update recently (last few weeks)?
-when the browser colapses, was it in a site that needs to run something to load: java, some media player, activex, etc?
-did you get a message saying that "IE will stop working for your protection" or similar, part of which in bold?

I've been using Google Chrome lately Eric,so far I like it;)."Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories." Thomas Jefferson

If you had XP, then I'd say your problem was XP's security protection "Data Execution Prevention (DEP)". Some recent changes on it have really fraked it up, and I'm having to switch it of in many of our PCs.
I'm not familiar with Vista, but what you describe seems very similar to what happens in XP. So, you may want to try this link, on how to switch this off:
Enable or Disable DEP in Vista
Be warned: I've never tried this in Vista, so you're on your own.
