Caught this on the aol news: I've seen a sea critter make a wake like this before. Normally they are bottom dwellers but often glide along just under the surface looking for a quick snack. They have no upper fins so you only know what they are by their wake. Sorry I couldn't download the photo but all it shows is a wide wake anyway.

I think it is a Manta Ray.

In my division we had a Captain who made a movie back in the early 50's about Mantas. I saw it on TV and this guy had guts. They would come alongside a surface loafing Manta, loop a rope around its horns and then this guy would jump out of the boat onto the top of the Manta and ride it Roman Style. Dang that Manta could swim fast. It couldn't dive because the rope was like a harness that kept it up ON the surface.

Jumping off to go back to the boat was no biggie as the Manta would crash dive to the bottom as soon as the rope slackened off.

(Aug. 23) - An unknown creature caught on video lurking beneath a lagoon in West Palm Beach, Fla., has the city wondering what it could be, WPTV.com reported Sunday.

The mysterious creature was videotaped by the LagoonKeepers.org, a group that patrols the city's waterways in search of debris. "I hollered out ... and said, 'What is that?' We followed it, started taking video," said Greg Reynolds, a member of the group.

Don Serrano, who was with Reynolds, said the creature was "different, very different."

Reynolds said he and Serrano tried to catch up to it, but that every time they would get close to it, "it would just disappear." He named the creature "the elusive muck monster."

Thomas Reinert, a marine biologist who works for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, studied the video and said the creature appears to be moving in one direction and that it was not breaking the surface.
"Typically dolphins break the surface, sea turtles, manatee, a large school of fish. If it were a shark at that level, you would see a fin," the expert told WPTV.

"I can't definitely say what it is," he added.
Able to leap tall tales in a single groan.

I caught what is called 'skate' in bayou country, I always thought it acted like flounder in the way it fought a line.

Wish you had a pic or video of the mysterious creature, but it sounds lile something that flies lateral(sp) or parallell(sp) with the ocean floor...

Skate is like a manta, but not really, they have a big head/body and 'wings' so they don't swim the way most 'fish' do. The wings are catiligionous (much like a shark) and very tasty (much like a shark) if you cook them right....

Cook them right. Heh, 'bout anything on this earth is tasty if you cook it right (say the chef)...

RB, ya think it is eatable?
