  • Females in the Ring

I was just watching the video clip of two women in a net surrounded boxing ring pounding each other like drunk school boys.

The MMA bout between Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos is supposedly the breakthrough battle that will make female fighting mainstream.

Sorry about that. They did not employ the fine art of Boxing (hit only above the trunks) or ancient Greco/Roman wrestling (holds above waistline only) or Farmer Burns' Catch-as-catch-can (allowing grapple holds on legs as well as upper body).

What these fights look like are simply barroom brawls. (The professional wrestler shows are merely intense stunt shows). When the women were down on the deck with the one on top (pounding the one on the bottom) the speed and impact of the gloved fists merely looked pats rather than hits. Some of the grappling looked more like two Lesbians trying to get into a better position for climax.

This type of fighting (male or female) cannot be called a sport as there is no sportsmanship in it. Seeing two reasonably attractive women fighting viciously (supposedly) only appeals to SM men and women viewers to give them a reason to --- umm --- adjust something in their crotch.

My grandfather was a well known barroom brawler and a tough switchmen able to throw bums off the train. He owed that to being the Iowa State Lightweight wrestling champ circa 1910. But this exhibition would turn him over in his grave.

boxing??...i am not against female freedoms but boxing is just not "feminine"
Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none; be able for thine enemy rather in power than use; and keep thy friend under thine own life's key; be checked for silence, but never taxed for speech.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a brutal sport. I'm not against women competing in the sport.. but would I watch a woman's fight? No. Not for me.

On the other hand, since this is a "Females In The Ring" thread, I would pay to see the WWE women wrestle ;) This new generation of Divas is just awesome man, 10 outta 10 models :))

South African teen wins 800 amid gender-test flap

By RYAN LUCAS, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 49 minutes ago

BERLIN (AP)—Facing questions about her gender, South African teenager Caster Semenya easily won the 800-meter gold medal Wednesday at the world championships.

Her dominating run came on the same day track and field’s ruling body said she was undergoing a gender test because of concerns she does not meet requirements to compete as a woman.

Semenya took the lead at the halfway mark and opened a commanding lead in the last 400 meters to win by a massive 2.45 seconds in a world-leading 1 minute, 55.45 seconds. Defending champion Janeth Jepkosgei was second and Jennifer Meadows of Britain was third in 1:57.93.

After crossing the line, Semenya dusted her shoulders with her hands. Semenya did not speak to reporters after the race or attend a news conference.

About three weeks ago, the international federation asked South African track and field authorities to conduct the verification test. Semenya had burst onto the scene by posting a world-leading time of 1:56.72 at the African junior championships in Maruitius.

Her dramatic improvement in times, muscular build and deep voice sparked speculation about her gender. Ideally, any dispute surrounding an athlete is dealt with before a major competition. But Semenya’s stunning rise from unknown teenage runner to the favorite in the 800 happened almost overnight. That meant the gender test—which takes several weeks—could not be completed in time.

Before the race, IAAF spokesman Nick Davies stressed this is a “medical issue, not an issue of cheating.” He said the “extremely complex” testing has begun. The process requires a physical medical evaluation and includes reports from a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, internal medicine specialist and gender expert.

South Africa team manager Phiwe Mlangeni-Tsholetsane would not confirm or deny that Semenya was having such a test.

“We entered Caster as a woman and we want to keep it that way,” Mlangeni-Tsholetsane said. “Our conscience is clear in terms of Caster. We have no reservations at all about that.”

Although medals will be awarded for the 800, the race remains under a cloud until the investigation is closed, and Semenya could be stripped of the gold depending on the test results, IAAF general secretary Pierre Weiss said.

“But today there is no proof and the benefit of doubt must always be in favor of the athlete,” Weiss said.

Semenya’s rivals said they tried not to dwell on the issue before the race.

“I’ve heard a lot of speculation, but all I could do was just keep a level head and go about my business,” Meadows said. “If none of it’s true, I feel very sorry for her.”

One thing not in doubt was Semenya’s outstanding run.

“Nobody else in the world can do that sort of time at the moment,” Meadows said. “She obviously took the race by storm.”

He he is right. Another tumbling act by stunt women. Of course they are great looking do to the intense physical training they must go to in order to have firm and eye-catching bodies (and healed bones) like that just to do those stunts.

But it's not real wrestling. It's a stunt show. The comedy actor Buster Keaton could do that all by himself. Even up into his 60's he could still do a 108 misstep fall.

It's done for entertainment only and is NOT a true sport.

Well the beatings ain't fake. These wrestlers get hit in their heads with steel chairs, get thrown off ladders, get slammed through tables, and even a common body slam would hurt anyone.

I'm a wrestling fan, and I've been wrestling my whole life, I doubt a 60 year old could keep up unless his name was Rick Flair WOOOOOOOOOOOO

A couple of years ago, Larry King had a professional wrestler on his show along with the producer of a movie that shows today's wrestling on TV is for show. Hulk Hogan was also on the show but by a Video lead. They do admit they know who is going to "win" at the end but they also implore that once they get into the ring they do their best (to make it a great show). Yes, blood is often spilled, sometimes on cue and sometimes by accident. But when an opponent drags a steel folding chair out of the audience, you know what he is going to do with it. And they train and practice with each other to hit with the chair just right so it looks damaging, the chair is bent (or pre-weakened) the recipient knows its coming and prepares for it, etc., etc.

Sort of like the way I've won a couple of fights -- with head butts. Besides being half German and quarter Irish for a thick skull, I know when contact will be made and am mentally prepared for it. My opponent did not know and as I had the forward motion it knocked his head backwards causing almost instant dizziness which usually went away after the 2nd head butt. Never needed more than two.

True wrestling without all the drama, ketchup, etc. is an admirable sport but is often too boring as a spectator sport. When one wrestler gets a hold on his opponent and his opponent gets a counter-hold, they could be locked in that way for half an hour. Pretty boring so they've spiced it up --- for entertainment purposes only and not for the true capabilities of the contestant.

I've watched female boxing and I don't like it. Part of it is that, as folks have already pointed out, it's not feminine, but most of it is that they're just not very good at it.

I fenced a fair number of chicks in college and grad school and, well, they're just not ... "martial" by nature. I don't care how athletic, or how much of a tomboy she is, the vast majority of chicks don't grow up pretending to fight, getting into fights, getting coached by peers and dads and uncles about how to fight, watching movies and reading books about boxing, wrestling, war, fencing, swashbuckling, and all the rest.

99% of them weren't very good at all, no matter how hard they tried. They weren't as aggressive, as quick, or as interested in the match or the sport or its origins as the average guy was. That 1% chick was just as good or better than the average guy, but that's 1%.

So even if a chick has decided to train and perservere and get her t*ts pounded in in front of a crowd, who cares? She's still not going to be as fun to watch as 99% of the crappy male middleweights out there.

                        It's a circus act, not a sport.

Meh, as a sport, female wrestling still beats Cricket, Soccer or American football :P;).
