SK set up a cyber warfare command

SKorea to set up cyber warfare command: official - Yahoo! News

IMO, it is like a response to a intelligent analysis in May that NK has set up a "technology reconnaissance team" to attack US and SK computer networks. During war, if such attacks occur, they would be from also Japan but more likely from China. With its strong internet censorship, it is interesting to know China's role.

Master of the computer who surprised the world. The name is ridiculous but whoever gave it to him is much more.
It doesn't mean NK agents' skill can be underestimated. Computer science doesn't require much high technology.

Well, let's put it this way, if Terminator comes true, North Korea would be the least affected by Skynet in Asia, and has the potential to be the regional resistance HQ. Hell, do they even have adequate electricity supply?

N Korea is a prime suspect. S Korea and the US are both attacked.

SKorean Web sites hit by suspected cyber attack
1 hr ago SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Suspected cyber attacks paralyzed Web sites of major South Korean government agencies, banks and Internet sites in a barrage that appeared linked to similar attacks in the U.S., South Korean officials said Tuesday.

The sites of 11 organizations including the presidential Blue House, the Defense Ministry, the National Assembly, Shinhan Bank, Korea Exchange Bank and top Internet portal Naver went down or had access problems since late Tuesday, said Ahn Jeong-eun, a spokeswoman at Korea Information Security Agency.

They appeared to be linked to the knockout of service of Web sites of several government agencies in the United States, though investigators are still unsure who was behind the attacks, Ahn said.

An initial investigation found that many personal computers were infected with a virus program ordering them to visit major official Web sites in South Korea and the U.S. at the same time, Korean agency official Shin Hwa-su said.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said that military intelligence officers were looking at the possibility that the attack may have been committed by North Korean hackers and pro-North Korea forces in South Korea.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said it could not immediately confirm the report.

South Korean media reported in May that North Korea was running a cyber warfare unit that tries to hack into U.S. and South Korean military networks to gather confidential information and disrupt service.

The U.S. sites were hit by a widespread and unusually resilient computer attack that began July 4, The Associated Press has learned. ...

There is no evidence that these attacks are from N Korea. They are more likely from hackers.

Is North Korea Behind Cyber Attacks?
9 July [BusinessWeek] It’s easy to blame North Korea for nasty attacks on the global community. After all it is an international bogeyman facing sanctions by the U.N. for undertaking nuclear and missile tests in defiance of numerous calls for an end to its dangerous weapons programs. Yet the fact is there’s no evidence that Pyongyang is behind attacks on more than two dozen of major U.S. and South Korean websites in recent days, as suspected by Seoul’s spy agency.

It simply is too early to point fingers at North Korea or anyone else for the attacks that began on the July 4 U.S. Independence Day holiday. The widespread attacks, targeting websites of such government bodies as the White House, the Pentagon, the South Korean presidential office and the National Intelligence Service, Seoul’s equivalent of the CIA, are primarily designed to disrupt systems by deluging them with Internet traffic rather than penetrate them and obtain internal or classified files. The relatively simple attacks could have been waged by hackers looking to make money or prove their skill sets. ....

Places like China are excellent proxies for various cyber attacks and other clandestine activities, due to their sheer size and often differing priorities of the authorities.
