  • The F-14 Tomcat

If any plane needs a thread then it has to be the F-14.

Currently one of the best planes opertional if not the best. It is in service with the USN and IRIAF. Both nations have used it in live combat in very mnay roles. The USN has used it for fleet defense, escort, strike, recce and to guide LGBs dropped by F/A-18s and the IRIAF used it for air combat missions and at least one strike mission.

Weapons it has been cleared to launch
    AIM-54A/C
    AIM-7E/F/M
    R-73E (IRIAF)
    AIM-9P/L/M (any version)
    R-550 Mk.2 (IRIAF)
    JDAM (USN)
    Laser Guided Bombs (USN)

    Planes it has shot down
    MiG-25PD/RB/BM
    Mirage F-1EQ
    MiG-23MS/MF/ML/BN
    MiG-21MF/bis
    Tu-22B
    Tu-16
    H-6D
    Su-20/22M-3/4K

It has also shot down C-601s, SS-N-2s, Exocets and Silkworms.

The one plane that shot them down was the Mirage F-1EQ-6 which was in 2 dogfights towards the end of the war.

To bad it is being phased out for such a bad replacement. Who knows maybe one day the "super horror" and F-14 will fight in live combat.

I too bow to the mighty Tomcat, it is a horrible shame to see her leave the fleet.

I love that plane. Has anyone here ever read Rivers of Babylon by Nelson Demille?

My brother really liked the F-14 whilst I was a diehard Hawg fan. I do like the Tomcat though. It's a shame that they had to "discover" her air-to-ground capability so late in life.

The day I found out I was going to VF14 to be a Top Hatter was one of the greatest days of my life. I crewed, or as the Navy called itwas the plane captain for aircraft 101 Buno 159618 from 1985 to 1989. There is no doubt that the F14 is the best long range stand off interceptor in the world today. Curiosly enough it has never fired an AIM54 in anger. Two cruises on the JFK in 85 and then in 88. Got some great pics guys.

I've also got (or used to have) some nice F-14 Top Hatter pics, usually landing with that big black top hat on the tail. Love that insignia, it's got class :smoke

Actually they have. The IRIAF made a good deal of kills using the AIM-54A and the USN fired them at fleeing MiG-25RBs and missed.

It's more then just a AWG-9/APG-71 radar and a AIM-54 it has also made kills with the AIM-9, AIM-7 and even the guns. Plus it can bomb farther then any USN navy plane in service.

How would the bombcat compare to the A-6E?

What Troung said, with the addition that the Mig-25's destroyed their engines in the process of escape by going overspeed.

The MiG-25's also burned out their engines trying to reach SR-71 Blackbirds.
