Top 5 Navys In The World?

  • #2
    1. U.S.
    2. Japan
    3. U.K.
    4. France
    5. Russia

Unless Sniper brings up those damn Backfires again lol, then I guess Russia would move up to #3. But until such a thing occurs I'm just talking about things that move on water (besides carrier aircraft) :)

What happend to Japan? Is it because their constitution ties their armed forces down or do you have another reason for not listing them?

Mainly because of their constitution, but there are too many other carrier operators to list Japan above them IMO.

Spain and Italy both operate small carriers, and probably have the best fleet AAW of any of the European NATO partners.

Sniper France is a little ticked at you. LOL They operate a nuclear carrier and the same new AAW escorts as Italy although wiil probably have 4 vice 2 of them. They also have SSN and SSBN.

              So mine:

              1.US

              2. UK

              3. France

              4. Russia(They could certainly move ahead of the above two but lack of training, non-operational ships and lack of modernization are hurting them right now.)

              5. Japan (Only drawback as mentioned is lack of a carrier plus no SSN/SSBN) But their surface Combatants are second only to US in #s and quality.)

              Honorable Mention

              China
              India
              Spain
              Italy
              Brazil

Austrailia would be 13th behind Germany and The Netherlands and just ahead of S. Korea and Canada.

                For me:
                1. USA
                2. UK
                3. Russian Federation (Those attack subs could do terrible hurt if they'd just look after them)
                4. Japan
                5. France

India, Italy, the PRC, Spain etc. are decent, and the PRC is getting a lot better, but they are still too small or outdated to be in the top five.

Hey Spoonman whats your take on Austrailia?

Also just wondering if Russia is ahead of France why not ahead of the UK?

Or is it nearly unaminous that no one likes France?

                    Rick,

Not a navy guy here but the new Canadian CDS is sounding like the death knell for the navy's task group concepts. The IROQUOIS/TRIBAL Class is going to be mothballed when they're done their life service. The rest of the navy is seemingly being turned into supportting the army. In essence, the new CDS is turning the CF into a USMC type force.

The question that comes to mind is would the limited funds that are now being slated (in 3-4 years) be enough for the HALIFAX Class to still form task groups to support American CVBGs? Can CF/MC still remain viable as a naval force?

Just want to get an idea what the navy guys are thinking on this.

                      Canada Oh Canada.

They want to play on the world stage. But they dont have(or wont spend?) the funds.

So they are torn. Disavow the U.S. or work closely with them.

Our two navies have worked closely together for decades. OTOH that cant always be said about the two countries in general.

Having a Canadian Frigate in a USN Task Force is a major plus. With the new helos it would be even more than that.

The proposed new Replenishment/transport ships are intriguing and would give Canada the option they want of working with the U.S., another ally or in limited situations going it alone.

The lack of a coherent plan for replacing the Tribals or updating the Halifax class is troubling.

The ex-UK sub buy isnt at least so far proving particularly wise. OTOH what better choice did they have?

Me personnally? Ill sail and fight side by side with any Canuck that would have me. John Candy was/is my hero and Im only a skinny little runt. LOL

David Shirlaw owner of of Seawaves.com based in North Vancouver BC I think would vouch for my veracity. His site is down until the weekend but it is a must for anyone serious about World Navies.

If I havent answered you well enough throw some more questions at me. I live for it. LOL

The French bought F-100 air defense frigates based on the US Aegis system?

                        Somehow i missed that.

No. They and Italy are collaborately building Horizon class AAW ships with the new EMPAR radar.

Spain built F-100 AAW Frigates with AEGIS. While Germany and The Netherlands built similar ships(all have major differences) with the new APAR radar.

The UK is building AAW ships with the new Sampson radar.

The UK, French and Italian radars are rotators while the US, Spain, Germany and Netherlands have fixed arrays. APAR is an active system meaning it does illumination. The AEGIS system uses separate illuminators. The UK, French and Italian radars dont have illumination incorporated because the ASTER missle doesnt need it. They and the APAR do apparently need a separate volume/early-warning radar. AEGIS does not.

Just had a discussion on this. Here I think. Check some threads below.

I'm pretty sure Horizon was either cancelled, or is so far behind schedule(over cost) that it will never see the light of day.

                            Or i'm way wrong...

                            LOL

EDIT: Just did a little googling. Seems the French have one Horizon so far. Amazing considering the rumors of cancellation WRT the Horizons i've been reading for the past 5 years. Good for them.

Way wrong for France and Italy. They will be in service Dec 2006 and 2007 respectively.

Although the UK pulled out of the program except for the ASTER missle. Although the volume search/early warning radars are very similar along with those for Germany and the Netherlands.

And those ships are much delayed(Daring now in-service 2009 vice 2007) and over budget.

Again see the AEGIS system thread below.
