  • Coalition threatens to topple Canadian Government

Canada's minority Conservative government face the threat of being toppled by a coalition of two opposition parties unhappy with economic policy.

What do you guys think of the situation? Canada just had an election and the public voted for Harper. Now we could see someone else as the Prime Minister without the consent of the people.

There's already a thread on this. I take issue that whoever is Prime Minister by January would not have the consent of the people.

Dion is not yet Prime Minister, but in a Parliamentary system, any Prime Minister that has the confidence of Parliament by inference has the consent of the people. That includes people who win the leadership of a Party then becomes the Prime Minister without a national vote. ie Tuner and Campbell who are our 17th and 19th Prime Ministers respectively.
