Teen shows up bruised, chained at Calif. gym

    By SUDHIN THANAWALA
    Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Police are questioning a couple after a bruised and half-naked 17-year-old boy showed up at a gym with a chain locked to his ankle, claiming he had just fled his captors, authorities said.

Matt Robinson, a spokesman for Tracy police, said authorities believe the teen was held against his will in Tracy - a city about 60 miles east of San Francisco - after he ran away from a Sacramento foster home in 2007.

Robinson said authorities are questioning a couple in their 30s, but that they have not been arrested or charged.

He said the emaciated boy was confused when first approached by detectives Monday, unsure where he had come from and how long had been held against his will. He has been taken to a hospital.

"The wounds he had and his physical condition as well as having a chain around his leg corroborated his basic statement that he was being held against his will," Robinson said.

Chuck Ellis, a manager of the In-Shape Sports Club, said the boy came into the fitness center Monday afternoon wearing only boxer briefs, covered with what appeared to be soot. Ellis says the teen was scared someone was going to come after him and asked to be hidden.

"He said, `Don't let them get me, don't let them get me,'" Ellis said. "He was totally terrified."

Ellis said the teenager told him he was picked up after running away from the foster home to look for his family and that he was held for almost a year. Ellis said he looked like he was between 10 and 12 years old.

Robinson said the couple being questioned lives close to the fitness center. He said police are still investigating how the boy may have ended up in the couple's custody.

Robinson said detectives plan to interview the boy more Tuesday when he is a "little healthier."

SAN FRANCISCO - A Calif. couple has been taken into police custody after an emaciated 17-year-old boy ran into a fitness center Monday afternoon with a chain wrapped around his ankle with a padlock on it, a Tracy police spokesman told KCRA-TV.

Kelly Lau-Schumacher, 30, and her husband, Michael Schumacher, 34, face one charge each of torture, kidnapping, false imprisonment, child endangerment, and corporal injury to a child, according to police spokesman Matt Robinson.

What kind of punishment are they looking at if found guilty?

          The article didn't say.

What kind of background check is done to be a foster family? Or was the teen out of control and they snapped...not that it is any kind of an excuse to hold someone captive, and torture them!

          Pretty sad though...

The first article said he was running away from his foster home to look for his family. I wonder why he was put in a foster home to begin with?

17 seems rather "old" to be fostered to a early 30's couple. Once all the hoo ha has settled we will no doubt get the correct story

I didn't read it that they were the foster parents.....it looks like they kidnapped him when he was on the run from his foster parents.
It doesn't matter how old they, abuse is abuse wether it is for kids or adults

I was assuming that they were his foster parents...unless he was running away from a foster home and they "kidnapped" him?

But like you said...abuse is abuse! I just don't understand how people can abuse other people like that!

                    Update:

                    Charges of torture, abuse
They were booked on charges of torture, kidnapping and child abuse, and were set to appear in court Thursday, according to online jail records. The couple were being held at San Joaquin County jail on bail of nearly $1.2 million each.

Police still were seeking Caren Ramirez, 43, the boy's aunt, on suspicion of participating in the alleged abuse, Robinson said. Investigators were trying to figure out the connection between the couple and Ramirez, who authorities believe occasionally visited the home in Tracy, about 70 miles south of Sacramento.

It beggars belief how these sick people manage to live a life that appears to be perfectly normal to most of their friends and relatives. Such cold, calculating manipulative animals.

Don't you find that though in abuse cases...especially domestic and child abuse. The abuser doesn't like the outside world to know what is going on obviously, but they are very manipulative. They know how to keep their victims exactly where they want them so that eventually their victims have no self worth. Usually these cretans are all apologetic and won't do it again etc.... but they always do.
To everyone else they come across as being nice people and as we say "butter wouldn't melt" type characters but once the doors are closed then its a different story.
