Australia's Katich accuses India of negative tactics

NAGPUR, India, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Australia centurion Simon Katich accused India of negative tactics in the fourth and final test after his own side's defensive batting on Saturday had marred their chances of forcing a series-levelling victory.

India's bowlers operated successfully to a packed off-side field to restrict the runs when the tourists needed to post a commanding first innings total at a fast rate to get into a position to grab a result.

"You are kidding me, are you not? We were the defensive with an 8-1 field?" Katich told a news conference when asked about their slow batting in the first session.

Australia added 166 runs in 85.4 overs at a snail's pace on the third day while losing eight wickets to be bowled out for 355, a first innings deficit of 86 runs.

"(Michael) Hussey and I were pretty content to try and wait it out and then review it later in the day," Katich said.

"Unfortunately that didn't happen due to both of us getting out. When that doesn't come off, it doesn't look great.

"It is good strategy if you can execute it. If you don't get it right, you can pay a price but they (India) executed it well. That is the bottom line."

Katich said Australia would now look at keeping their second innings target to 300.

The world's top-ranked team have not lost a series since the 2005 Ashes tour of England.

India speedster Ishant Sharma stood by India's strategy.

"I don't think it was a negative line. You can see that some balls, Hussey and Katich got edges and it went through the hands," he told reporters.

"We have certain plans against every batsman. We went for a few runs the last evening, we just were bowling in our right areas.

"Obviously they are known as a very attacking team. If they are known as an attacking team, they are trying to do things but it can't go in their favour always. It went in our favour, that is very good for us." (Editing by John Mehaffey)

Simply too amusing; just had to post. Isn't it amazing when Aussie batsmen start sticking squash balls in their gloves, or bowl underarm deliveries, or run off pitch to screw up the opponent's batting pitch; it is all fair and game, since it was not against the rules in the gamebook! Yet, when someone comes up with a unique field placement strategy to put the Aussies on the defensive, it becomes a negative tactic!!

They always make these kind of stories, when they are rattled and at the end claim it has mind games
It is so. It cant be otherwise

The most negative thing about this tour was us turning up in the first place. Times have changed, but that is the beauty of Cricket!

      SIGH!

Ignore what Katich has to say & look at what commentators were saying - including Indian ones. The tactics were negative & do test cricket no favours. I thought Dhoni was up to more than that.\

As for cheap shots about behaviour - India has zero moral high ground. When our players are suspended we don't pick them, threaten to pick them or threaten to call off a tour.

Commentors? Oh, you mean Ian Chappell? He wants that fielding placement banned. Why? because the Aussies couldn't play with it? Is it Dhoni's fault that the Aussies couldn't think out of the box? The fielding strategy which Dhoni layed out is suicide for the fielding side on any given day; if the batsman can take advantage of it. Is it Dhoni's fault, the Aussies couldn't? What is stopping the Aussies from doing the same to India?

And yet Gambhir sat out. What ticks us off is when the Aussies aren't metted the same treatment. Who provoked Gambhir? Purposely getting in the way of a batsman is cheating mate; more then any fielding strategy. We don't claim to have the moral high ground, and neither should you. Australia is one team which every cricketing side has had major issues with.

When you are on losing side, you have to put blame on somebody. Isn't that the rule?.

Blame the English. Ain't no game so famous in this country like cricket. Like religion.
