  • Russian authority imposed delays cost Turkish firms $500mln

The delays caused by Russian authorities on Turkish export products have cost Turkish companies $500 million to date, Turkish State Minister Kursad Tuzmen said Sunday.

It was unacceptable for Russia to make it difficult for Turkish exports to enter the Russian market, Tuzmen told reporters in Ankara.

"We have not yet been able to solve the difficulty with Russia. Our Deputy Prime Minister Hayati Yazici held a meeting with the Russian Customs chairman (to solve the problem) in Istanbul," Anatolian Agency quoted Tuzmen as saying.

"We hope that the process with Russia will end in a way so as to benefit Turkish exporters," he added.

Turkish and Russian customs officials said on Friday that the recent dispute that erupted after Russian customs imposed tighter controls on Turkish exports was expected to be solved within a week after the signing of a protocol for simplified customs relations.

Hundreds of trucks transporting Turkish exports to Russia have been held at the country's checkpoints for up to four weeks, creating huge financial losses for exporters.

The row has triggered speculation that Russia is trying to punish Turkey for allowing U.S. warships carrying aid to Georgia to pass through the Bosporus to the Black Sea.

Who will pay those companies for the losses? I'd ask the TR governement to cover the losses as they messed the deal with the Russian customs

What does Bulgaria and Romania export to Russia?

                What is the Monto Treaty?

Montaux Convention. It established the recognition of the post-Ottoman Turkish state and governs the admittance of warships into the black sea. Certain classes of vessels by non-Black Sea states are prohibited like subs, aircraft carriers and battleships. Plus no aircraft carrier (true aircraft carriers) can pass through the Bosphorus. Non-BS nations can only have 45,000 tons of warship in the sea at any one time, no more than 15,000 tons in any one hull and no more than 9 combatants IIRC, and only 1 non-Turkish warshiship at a time can transit the Bosphorous. Over the years the holes in the treaty have been exploited by NATO and Russia.

Forexample the missiles used on ships are bigger than the diameter allowed for guns. The Soviets said this means Turkey could not allow US cruisers into the Blacksea. Turkey said, nope- torpedoes are a closer analog in size and self propulsion an they are not adressed so missiles are not gun. So the Soviets added missiles to their carries and told Turkey the Kiev was not a carrier but an aircraft equipped missile cruiser.

During the Cold War the USSR often kept 1 warship in transit back and forth at all times to block NATO entry into the Black Sea.

NATO has every right to cruise the Black Sea. They are only doing this to the U.S. notice the others are not mentioned so easily because Russia dont want to piss them off and have them give basing rights.;)

Actually nato don't have every right to cruise unless they bring ships via land :D. There is a tonnage limit which regulates number of ships oh non-blacksea powers according to montreux as zraver mentioned.
