10,000 protest in NZ over anti-Asian violence - World - BrisbaneTimes

An estimated 10,000 people have taken part in a rally in pouring rain in Auckland, New Zealand to protest against violence against Asians in the city.

Police said the demonstration stretched about 2.5 kilometres through the streets of south Auckland where three people of Asian descent have been killed in the past month.

The march was organised by the Asian Anti-Crime group and included people carrying coffins and placards with pictures of those killed.

Others carried New Zealand flags and signs calling for tougher sentencing and zero tolerance for crime.

Liquor store owner Navtej Singh was shot and killed during a robbery at his shop on June 7, a week later 80-year-old Yan Ping Yang died after being attacked by an intruder in her home.

Joanne Wang, 39, died in hospital in late June after being knocked down by a stolen vehicle in a shopping mall car park after her handbag was snatched.

3 people died in less that 2 weeks.

If police can't protect the people, who else can.

Feeling sad for the dead, they died needlessly.

Racial, ethnic and religious tensions are growing in the world.

      It is an unfortunate phenomenon.

Policing can be that much and no more. Maybe investigative arm of the Police should be revamped and sentences made tougher irrespective of race or colour based on foolproof evidence.

Without evidence, cases fall through inspite of the best of intentions.

there aren't enough police resource, they are all busy doing traffic ticketing. also personally i think NZ should bring the death penalty back. so that the potential offenders get warned and the innocent won't die needlessly.

Hell no. We have plenty of police, and we also have plenty of people who have been wrongly convicted.
Our laws and length of sentences are amongst the toughest in the world. What we need is 50 years to weed out the gangs, whether local mongrel mob types, or the imported ones from the States and Hong Kong etc.

How do the police know what the crimes are racially based? According to the article it sounds like they have no suspects in custody so how do they know they were attacked because of their race/ethnicity and not because it was a robbery gone bad?

              Exactly!

None of those events seem to be about race rather, just coincidence that the people killed by these a$$holes happened to be Asian.
I would be very surprised if Anglos have not suffered the same fate, possibly on more occaisions but just not publicised so well.

              Cheers.

They don't and they weren't. The liquor store owner was killed by some prospects for booze and the contents of his till, another woman was killed when she tried to hang onto her bag during a drive-by bag snatching (though the police did make noises about 'Asians carrying around more cash than Pakeha', no explanation was given for the other ethnicities who'd also had their bags nicked) and the third was a home invasion/robbery.
Part of the fuss here is the increase in the use of the word 'Asian' as a catch-all for any non-pakeha, non-Maori.
Until recently New Zealand has at least tried to define people by ethnicity rather than the generic 'Asian'. So to put a Chinese grandmother in the same category as a Sikh is a bit like putting a Maori in the same category as a Zulu. "Well you know, they both from the same hemisphere"

Were the attacks racially motivated? They don't sound like it, they sound like "normal" crimes gone wrong.

Certainly nothing on the level of Cronulla in Australia, that's for sure (I was expecting something along the lines of that when I saw the headline)

Does that mean they would put an Aussie in the same category as a Kiwi?

edit- And look what a deep and thought provoking post for number 100.

How big is the New Zealand Police Force? What is the officer to civilian ratio?

Do they still carry their issued sidearms in locked boxes in their trucks or have they advanced into the modern era and openly carry them so they are available when needed?

How easy is it for an average citizen to legally own and carry a firearm?
