By that same reasoning we should be spending half of the world's resources on preventing a giant meteor impact. Especially since those defenses would also be useful against any future alien attack. The other half should be spent preventing a catastrophic plague that wipes out 90% of humanity. Although really we should also spend a crapload on space colonization, since it's most likely that we'll eventually come across some problem we can't fix. It's much safer to hedge our bets and get colonies on Mars and Titan ASAP, and interstellar colonies too. And of course, there are all sorts of other possible ways for the world to end, so we should really spend a lot trying to think of possible end of the world scenarios and preventing them...I enjoy being wrong too much to change my mind.

Perhaps if we engage in good stewardship of our only home we can live long enough where aliens and meteors become a more credible threat. The environment is one of those areas where there is no downside for those willing to invest now and embrace change. There is huge profit to be made, technologies to be driven forward better quality of life for most people and a host of other reasons to clean up Mother Earth even if climate change isn't real or if Global warming isn't fixable. Clean drinking water, weakening the Wahabist financial backing, lower enegery consumption without rationing or conservation, technological growth, reduced smog, better bio-diversity why not clean up the planet? The gains outweigh the risks and that makes it a sound investment.
