  • Don't ask, don't tell legislation

Maybe it's because I lived through Apartheid that I'm overly sensitive to discrimination in any form.

When it is legislated by the country we all consider the leader of the free world it makes an interesting topic for discussion.

America sets the benchmarks and thereby attracts scrutiny of her policies - that is a compliment by the way.

While I'm not gay I find the continuing legislation against them in your military surprising.

Screw 'em. I'm sick and tired of being told that it's a good idea for a guy to poke another guy in the heinie.

Just stop it, or if you're gonna do it, shut the hell up about it. I don't demand special treatment at work because of MY sexual kinks, neither should you.

It's not surprising when you consider that most potential recruits are not gay and are for the most part biased against gays. This is especially true of recruits from rural and hispanic backgrounds. I think the fear is that an open door policy toward gays would hurt overall recruitment. It may be backward to your way of thinking, but that is the way it is...:)

Don't ask, don't tell is fine as a policy, but the fairies/ nancy girls/ gay find their niche in any environment and under any policy!

The **** hits the ceiling when it is discovered!

          Very simply

When I did my service we were involved in a war - guys were sent up to South West Africa (Namibia) and Angola.

There were gays in our units but they would never have dreamed of coming out in South Africa 1982/3

It never worried me. Never gave it a moments thought. If they were gay good luck.

What did worry me then and now is bullying.

I just never came to terms with it then or now.

As a specialised criminal attorney I deal with some seriously dangerous guys. Johannesburg is the murder capital of the world.

The job entails fighting for the underdog.

Guys who have got themselves into serious trouble - Friends, family and society abandon them.

I can see the pain that people suffer when they are shunned by society.

Gays suffer the same without any basis for hatred other than they may be different to you.

It's easy to join the herd and jump on the defenseless. It's hard to be a man and say garbage to hatred and intolerance.

I support the gays and lesbians and all the underdogs because I know what it's like to live in their shoes.

They're just human beings who have a different sexuality to the mainstream.

Making that a basis for legislated discrimination is garbage.

JAD I am the other point of view.

I'm also a straight who served with gays in the military during
                  conflict.

I also served with many other minorities.

I had to train those troops and try and be even handed.

I understand that the guys feel uncomfortable. But there are a million reasons why we feel uncomfortable in life. We don't legislate against them.

Remember I fought to uphold the digusting system known as Apartheid.

                  Legislated discrimination.

Object and you got 6 years in prison and there goes any hope of a career.

I concede that guys may feel uncomfortable but then legislate on unbecoming conduct NOT on the fact that someone is different.

After a full career in uniform, I can truthfully say that I never met a homosexual in the services. I did hear rumours about one fellow, but I refused to traffic in rumour. The person in question was killed when his Land Rover drove over a mine. Was he a 'gay' (to use a hi-jacked term)? I don't know, but the least I can do is to give him the benefit of the doubt.

More importantly, would it have mattered if he was?

That mine didn't know the difference.

I believe that anyone who wishes to serve their country ... gay, bisexual, lesbian, or straight should be allowed to do so.

What annoys me is how their are some gays who pretty much try to make everything into a gay rights issue and shove it in your face almost as a taunt.

How does a person's sexual preference (provided they're within reasonable bounds) have anything to do with their military competence?

Points concerning the cohesion of military life and how it would be impacted by gays: Well, so much for military professionalism, eh?

Since when is admitting openly gay people 'special treatment'?

And to those talking about *****ing and hollering of gays on the subject, well what do you expect? If they're prevented from serving their country and being normal human beings, what should they do, keep quiet as a mouse? Even if the propaganda of a portion of gays was unreasonable, it is hardly a reason to keep down all of them.
