Gates Taps CNO as New U.S. Joint Chiefs Chair

    By WILLIAM H. MCMICHAEL

U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace will step down as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in September, and Navy Adm. Mike Mullen will be nominated to replace him as the nation’s top military officer, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced June 8.
Gates also announced he’ll recommend that President Bush nominate U.S. Strategic Command chief Marine Gen. James Cartwright as the next vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He would replace Navy Adm. Edmund Giambastiani, who earlier this week announced his intention to retire this summer.
Gates said “no decision has been made at this point” on Mullen’s replacement as chief of naval operations.
Pace became the 16th Joint Chiefs chairman in 2005 under former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Pace is the first Marine to hold the military’s top job. If confirmed, Mullen would be the fourth admiral to hold the job.
Mullen, a 1968 graduate of the Naval Academy, became the Navy’s top sailor July 22, 2005. From 2004 to May 2005, he served as commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Joint Forces, Naples. As a flag officer, Mullen served as director of the Navy’s Surface Warfare Division, deputy chief of naval operations for resources, requirements and assessments, and vice chief of naval operations from 2003 to 2004.
