  • Probably old news - testing robotic uav's

Tried a direct link to the BBC video here -

    BBC Media Selector

but if that doesn't work, the BBC link page is here

    BBC NEWS | Technology

and the story is the video link on the left 3/4s of the way down. You could imagine all sorts of possibilities from these tests -

drone planes that could follow / circulate around the main manned attack plane attracting enemy missiles so the real plane can do its job
escort fighter drones protecting or performing extreme high "G" maneouvres for the manned plane that a human couldn't survive
spotter "eyes" for the manned airplane to keep the surrounding area scanned.

Interestingly the RAF tests are with single seat Tornadoes. The analyst speaks of fighter pilot overload, but maybe a 2nd "pilot" could do the job of manning these things?

All far too technical for a non fly-boy like me!

I can't view the video, but will point out that there are NO single seat Tornados only two seaters.
Semper in excretum. Solum profunda variat.

      OOOPPS.

Thanks for that Glyn, when I was watching the video I wondered about the two seat Tornado in the background that the reporter kept referring to - then the analyst spoke of pilot overload. Couldn't work out whether he meant in reference to the tornado or all fighter pilots in general. I wondered what the guy in the back was up to if the pilot had all the decisions and work to do - but as I said, I'm no flyboy. (although I DO want to build and fly an autogyro one day soon)

Shame you couldn't see the vid - it would have been repeated on BBC News throughout yesterday.
