The Troops Also Need to Support the American People - Early Warning

William M. Arkin on National and Homeland Security
The Troops Also Need to Support the American People
I've been mulling over an NBC Nightly News report from Iraq last Friday in which a number of soldiers expressed frustration with opposition to war in the United States.

I'm sure the soldiers were expressing a majority opinion common amongst the ranks - that's why it is news - and I'm also sure no one in the military leadership or the administration put the soldiers up to expressing their views, nor steered NBC reporter Richard Engel to the story.

I'm all for everyone expressing their opinion, even those who wear the uniform of the United States Army. But I also hope that military commanders took the soldiers aside after the story and explained to them why it wasn't for them to disapprove of the American people.

Friday's NBC Nightly News included a story from my colleague and friend Richard Engel, who was embedded with an active duty Army infantry battalion from Fort Lewis, Washington.

Engel relayed how "troops here say they are increasingly frustrated by American criticism of the war. Many take it personally, believing it is also criticism of what they've been fighting for."

First up was 21 year old junior enlisted man Tyler Johnson, whom Engel said was frustrated about war skepticism and thinks that critics "should come over and see what it's like firsthand before criticizing."

"You may support or say we support the troops, but, so you're not supporting what they do, what they're here sweating for, what we bleed for, what we die for. It just don't make sense to me," Johnson said.

Next up was Staff Sergeant Manuel Sahagun, who is on his second tour in Iraq. He complained that "one thing I don't like is when people back home say they support the troops, but they don't support the war. If they're going to support us, support us all the way."

Next was Specialist Peter Manna: "If they don't think we're doing a good job, everything that we've done here is all in vain," he said.

These soldiers should be grateful that the American public, which by all polls overwhelmingly disapproves of the Iraq war and the President's handling of it, do still offer their support to them, and their respect.

Through every Abu Ghraib and Haditha, through every rape and murder, the American public has indulged those in uniform, accepting that the incidents were the product of bad apples or even of some administration or command order.

Sure, it is the junior enlisted men who go to jail. But even at anti-war protests, the focus is firmly on the White House and the policy. We don't see very many "baby killer" epithets being thrown around these days, no one in uniform is being spit upon.

So, we pay the soldiers a decent wage, take care of their families, provide them with housing and medical care and vast social support systems and ship obscene amenities into the war zone for them, we support them in every possible way, and their attitude is that we should in addition roll over and play dead, defer to the military and the generals and let them fight their war, and give up our rights and responsibilities to speak up because they are above society?

I can imagine some post-9/11 moment, when the American people say enough already with the wars against terrorism and those in the national security establishment feel these same frustrations. In my little parable, those in leadership positions shake their heads that the people don't get it, that they don't understand that the threat from terrorism, while difficult to defeat, demands commitment and sacrifice and is very real because it is so shadowy, that the very survival of the United States is at stake. Those Hoovers and Nixons will use these kids in uniform as their soldiers. If it weren't about the United States, I'd say the story would end with a military coup where those in the know, and those with fire in their bellies, would save the nation from the people.

But it is the United States, and the recent NBC report is just an ugly reminder of the price we pay for a mercenary - oops sorry, volunteer - force that thinks it is doing the dirty work.

The notion of dirty work is that, like laundry, it is something that has to be done but no one else wants to do it. But Iraq is not dirty work: it is not some necessary endeavor; the people just don't believe that anymore.

I'll accept that the soldiers, in order to soldier on, have to believe that they are manning the parapet, and that's where their frustrations come in. I'll accept as well that they are young and naïve and are frustrated with their own lack of progress and the never changing situation in Iraq. Cut off from society and constantly told that everyone supports them, no wonder the debate back home confuses them.

America needs to ponder what it is we really owe those in uniform. I don't believe America needs a draft though I imagine we'd be having a different discussion if we had one.

America needs to ponder what it is we really owe those in uniform.

      1) For the media to close their doom & gloom mouths and stop constatnly twisting the facts as they see it to sell sell sell! Take a vote in Congress and Violate their so called "Rights" which they hide behind anytime they are called into account.

      2) Respect. They are following a Commander in Chiefs orders (Their soul job) either Republican or Democrat. So if you dont like it vote him out but stop polluting the air waves with your bullchit venom for Republicans and threatening to withdrawl support by levels and financial means.

      3) Faith - If it wasnt for armed conflict this country wouldnt exist in the first place. Put faith in them and feel confident they are doing their jobs as best they can even if somethings arent "politically correct". Nobody walking this planet is perfect if there was surely God has returned to reclaim us!

      4) Resolve- Resolve to speak in one voice to and about our troops for they are a godsend one of which is a great virtue of liberty!

      5) Put the people that protest at funerals in a prison. Somewhere far away from American shores for surely that are not American by any chance.

      6) Help- Help troops families that find it hard to pay the bills or home repairs and have the absence of one spouse or both. Either way help, it is more nobler then complaining and besides you dont have to choose sides when giving.

      7) Admiration- Give them the admiration they deserve. These people leave their jobs, families, friends and every creature comfort you enjoy at home for the defense of the United States and its intrests while YOU reap the benefits of living in a safe secure country that gives people the rights they so often claim are violated by the smallest notion.

      8) A THANK YOU WOULD SUFFICE VERY NICELY AND DOESNT APPLY TO "CHOOSING SIDES" REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT!

This creep is the biggest dick I've ever known with a serious writing gig, a true bully pulpit, and if there was any shame left at the Washington Post, he'd be out on his dumb ass for writing that swill. (Did any of you read it? He must have been drunk; it isn't even close to grammatically correct, to say nothing of the horribleness of the mental diarrhea he crapped out all over what used to be a halfway respectable paper.)

Never, have I EVER read anything so noxious. EVER.

It's almost like lulldapull is on the WP's masthead.

And just ponder THIS for one moment: at one time, way back there in '74-'78, this scumbag was actually a commissioned officer in the United States Army, in authority over other soldiers. Ponder that for a moment.

Having read this, I'm really quite disgusted by the tone.

                  Arkin should know better.

Even so, we (meaning those who do not support the war, and even have objections to it) are between a rock and a hardplace because we certainly appreciate the fact that we have a volunteer military who will stand between us and the enemy, but we don't approve of the reasoning that got them there, nor the stagnation and worsening of what was once called "victory". Actions like these are demoralizing and stupid at best.

One of my best friends served 1 year with the marines as a gunner on a humvee doing patrols, rescue and recovery, and convoy missions. Even though I loathed the fact that he had to be there, I was extremely thankful that people like him were willing to do so.

To cut and run would be a travesty: not only for the people of Iraq, but also for the morale of the U.S. military. The "Support our Troops: Bring them home" is nothing short of stupid.

As if it could ever be enough, to every person who ever has, does, or ever will serve in the U.S. armed forces, please accept this as a token of unconditional gratitude:

                  Thank You!

I appreciate it. We won't ever agree on the war, I suppose, but we're both indebted to those that serve for the rest of us.

That word you used - 'unconditionally'...just so, mate. They've never asked us to be worthy of their sacrifice (which I happen to believe that we as a nation usually just don't measure up to), and for my money, we don't get to thank them for all they do only when we happen to LIKE the cause that they bleed for.

No, sir, it just don't work like that. Parents don't just love their honor roll kids or the trophy winners...they love them ALL, UNCONDITIONALLY, and the sheer awe I feel towards the best ones, the ones that are gone away so that the rest of us can be here to read my poor words is literally inexpressable.

So, your heart is in the right place, and for me, that's a credit to you.

The great thing about America is that people don't have to support the war in Iraq, those people are usually wrong and in many cases (not always) complete idiots, but they have that right. But you can take it too far, the constant media distortion of the facts, as much a product of rank incompetence in modern American "journalism" as any agenda, the endless stream of assclown celeberties who decry the war, the wildly moronic Op Ed rantings of people like Michael Moore and Ted Rall, and the large scale protests of clueless hippys and dumbass college students (many of whom buy into the teachings of far left professors) take it too far. There's legitimate dissent and then there's giving aid and comfort to the enemy, which last I checked was still called treason in some places.

Ya Know just for once I would love to see an officer or a grunt confront somebody like this without a teleprompter to tell him what he can and cant say. Or the said officer not have to worry about military code while wearing the uniform and just flipping out and not be "politically correct" telling this idiot straight up. But alas being a part of the military has its drawbacks as far as politics and discussing such. I would love to see an officer or other address Congress and all these people at once and shut them up once and for all. And I would dam sure like to see a grunt reach over the table and ***** slap this idiot and put him in check and tell him if your not there they how could you possibly know anything. So STFU!

Its far easy to criticize from afar. Lets see them do it face to face.
