Snowplow operators join Sask. public sector strike

The strike by Saskatchewan public sector workers widened on Sunday after snowplow operators and other highway workers walked off the job at midnight.

The 131 workers, members of the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union, join jail guards and environment department workers, who hit the picket lines on Dec. 20.

RCMP officers are currently supervising provincial jails.

Because of the latest job action and a forecast of snow flurries for the next couple of days, highway officials are urging drivers to use extra caution.

A provincial website warns drivers that conditions may be grim, and it may take longer than normal for roads to be cleared.

The road workers are normally stationed at 22 locations. Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Hudson Bay, Melfort and Cumberland House are among the larger communities to be affected.

Smaller towns include Big River, Spiritwood, Kenaston, Outlook, Tisdale, Wakaw, Rosthern, Wynyard, Elfros, Leross, Kelvington and Watson.

Anyone heading out on the highways is encouraged to contact the highway hotline.

Negotiations broke off in December in a dispute over wages, contracting out, pension and health plan improvements and return-to-work protocols.
