With these new air bursting ammunition appearing to be more common like the ones used in the xm-307 it may be that future infantry soldier is cannon fodder unless something radical comes up in developing individual soldiers stealth and protection.

its got a recoil mechanism that makes it easily controllable and accurate up to 2000 meters, so its more of a precision weapon. not ment for anti air uses

The weapon was designed to hit the bad guy hiding behind cover. The 25mm round will burst above the target sending schrapnel from the explosive pressure. The thing about these XM weapons is that they are not made the way they simply because the way they are, XM weapons are developed according the needs and wants of the infantry men soldier. Feedback from soldiers testing it is important in the developmental process, so I have no doubt that the new XM weapons will be great weapons. XM8 will be a great weapon.

the Xm 307 is the more long term goal the 312 is meant for quick issue. the 307's 25-mm is the same round they want in the Xm 25 which once the weight is right will once again be mounted to the XM8 making the Selectable Assault Battle Rifle (an improved Xm29). to reach these goals they decided to split the 29 up and develop them separately well trying to keep them on a duet. but the lack of the projected 29 meant that the forces needed some thing to start the replacement of the M16 so the carbine was modified in to the XM8. well the GL was put in to more Modifications and is currently the Xm25. the 307 is to expensive for issue right now so the 312 was developed as a cheaper temp that uses common parts. also look for the Xm109

XM 307 is not very different from the MK19 or AGS-17 auto grenade launchers, maybe the effective range is increased by 400 mtrs.

Air bursting ammunition existed earlier also but troops still did'nt become cannon fodder. The shrapnel from the 25mm grenades is in the form of pellets. Since these are area weapons they serve well in defensive role in classic infantry defensive battles or used in suppressive fire role (from a fire base) during and infantry assault.

However, such weapons are very accurate. I have used the AGS-17. Wonder what improvement the XM 307 has over the MK19.

The XM312 looks very futuristic. Nothing to beat the good old .50 cal though, a very reliable HMG.
