Dear Members,

I could make a really long-winded post.. but I think the title says just about everything needed. How can we, the WAB staff, make your experience on this forum better? All comments, suggestions, criticisms, and feedback is welcome.

Thanks, Matt

Please stop moving the forums around. Not a huge deal, but it gets annoying.

I would like to see all the changes done with and over in a few days time and be left alone. It seems that, as of late, every few days something else changes or moves and I find myself wondering if I stumbled into the wrong place.

I understand that ideas are brought up and tried and tweaked and what not, but it is confusing and hard to keep up with.:)

As long as they keep in mind that there are women on the WAB, too. ;)

I kind've miss my name being bolded. I know the whole not want the newbies to feel left out thing, and I can appreciate that, but a bolded name here and there broke up the monotony of the exact same font of the current users online. Besides, it was kind of a rite of passage thing, too. :)

I've actually been talked to quite a few times about that.

The WAB Information Center was bumped down awhile back to shift content visitors may be interested in upward, so it would be viewable. The Firearms section was bumped down from first to fifth rank in the Military Topics category after a rather thorough review by a person who reviews forums and administers quite a few boards himself, as to not lend an inaccurate first impression of the forums content and membership to first-time visitors, as we have a quite diverse crowd here. I don't forsee any more forum moves in the near future.

Does anybody have any other suggestions? Appearance, ease of use, any suggestions for a portal? Photo galleries, blogs, podcasts, new discussion sections?

Thanks, Matt

I have been to a board with a members photo gallery. Posters can send self pics so everyone gets an idea of what everyone else looks like and who they're talking to. Just an idea.

From the top of my head ....

Better sub forum organization. Less is more.Have 3 simple categories:
1. Military, Defence
2. Politics, Geopolitiics, Strategic Affairs
3. The rest.

Get rid of the new bot and his sub forum.

Issues specific sub forum is no good. Saddam to die and Israel-palestine can be discussed in a broader Middle East/West Asia Strategic Forum. Iraq war technical discussions etc. can be done in the appropriate Defence/Military Forum.

--

This was just a sample. Chris can hire me as a consultant and I'll really put my head into it.

Oh and Google Ads in particular and PPC monetization in general doesn't really work that well for forums. There are some better less intrusive ways to have the forum pay its own bills and even turn over a good profit.

Ironduke
20 Nov 06,, 23:37
Srirangan,

Do you mean arrange them in that order?

As for having a single military and defense category, we'd have 10 forums there...

As for having merging Iraq and Israeli-Palestinian conflict forums into the Middle Eastern one... it may be appropriate considering they are part of the region, but they garner alot more interest and traffic with dedicated forums.

Also there should be more sections, I can't think of any at the moment but there deffinitely should be more sections. Any ideas?

Thanks to THL's "Pill Pushing" thread, I got an idea: a medicinal section. Alot of people on here must be knowledgable about medical practice and drugs enough to make some interesting discussions (THL, hydocodone and parihaka mainly)

Yes, we could add more sections, but at a price... we wouldn't want to lose our focus as a politics and defense forum...

Julie

Yes, we could add more sections, but at a price... we wouldn't want to lose our focus as a politics and defense forum...Why do we want to be strictly politics and defense?

Medications are a World Affairs item of discussion. This is the time to tac it because with the Democrats in, they are going to be making pharmaceuticals more competitive (well, they say they are). That would make for lots of discussion, and it will be politically motivated, wouldn't it?

PS: Check the popularity of the Pub.

THL
21 Nov 06,, 00:46
Certainly, but what about that idea about medicinal discussion?

Why for as har as you are pushing for this, I'd say you are looking for a "swap" section there. ;) I'd think that a medicinal thread could be started in the Pub if you have specific questions, but if I were you, I'd head over to WebMD first.

SilleEllis
21 Nov 06,, 00:47
I think you should open all the threads ind the "Latest World News" forum. Then we can discuss the news like they do in the papers. Only here we can do more than just comment on them. We can have a live debate. That is the advantage of reading news here. Or could have been the advantage, that is...

The problem is that threads move up when you write in them. Or is that a problem? Does it matter that there is a debate going on in a few threads? I don't think so. When the debate is flowing the mods can move the thread to the relevant forum.

Also there should be a sticky thread for news link. Sticky but open. Danish news in English, Swedish news in English, German news in English ect. All countries have newspapers that bring news from their country in English. WAB could put together a terrific collection of links so that we can get extra knowledge about everything.

Here's a link that belong in such a thread. It is an Eldorado for news freaks:

I think pharmaceutical topics can be covered adequately in existing forums... such as Science & Technology for breakthroughs, US Political Discussion for legislation concerning medicine, etc...

One definition of world affairs is: "international diplomacy, politics, history", another is "affairs between nations", And that's the way WAB is set up. The discussion at WAB revolves around politics, international diplomacy, and, as it is an extension of international diplomacy, military and defense topics.

I would like a medicinal section as well not only to discuss the tradional pharma, but the non-traditional as well. Tying any medicinals into politics is easy.

There are hundreds of subjects that could be tied into politics easily.... there are many forums with a focus on medicine, with actual experts on hand to answer questions.

I meant something like the tree drawn below:

+ Military, Defense Category
--- Army
--- Air Force
--- Navy
--- Missiles, WMD's

+ Geopolitical Category
--- Asia Pacific
--- Europe
--- Central Asia
--- South Asia
--- Middle East
etc. etc.

+ Other Forums
--- Help & Support
--- WAB Pub
--- News & Updates

Ironduke

WAB is a hybrid forum... we emphasize political, military, and defense topics, not a forum solely dedicated to the discussion of just military and defense topics.

Geopolitics is a narrower subset of politics in general, which can be defined as follows:

Geopolitics is the study which analyses geography, history and social science with reference to international politics. -Wikipedia

Geopolitics - the study or the application of the influence of political and economic geography on the politics, national power, foreign policy, etc., of a state. -Dictionary.com

To sum it up more concisely, and this is my definition, geopolitics is international strategic relations.

We do not wish to restrict ourselves to this type of political discussion, instead, we are open to the full range of local and national political discussion, as well as international relations.

I'm not saying WAB is not a forum for geopolitical discussion, it is indeed a vital part of our forum, and is discussed across many subforums, particularly the defense forums. It may appear there is a bit of redundancy as far as forum organization goes, but it is in no way harmful.

With regard to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Missiles & WMD's suggestion, this may work well for a forum that is more local in its focus, such as PFF, PDF, Pakmil, IDF, BR, etc., as users are actually discussing the services and capabilities of those nations in particular. I believe the East Asian Defense Topics forum is completely adequate for say, NK and Chinese nuclear weapons discussion, as is the South Asian Defense Topics section for Indian and Pakistani nuclear weapons discussion.

Also, we want to stand out from all of the other forums out there... there are many forums with more or less that exact structure (I can think of at least 10 of the top of my head). WAB in many ways stands out from the crowd in this regard and I believe this helps make us successful.

Srirangan
21 Nov 06,, 13:16
Hmm.. Is my tree restrictive? I don't really think so, here's an example:

+ International Affairs
+ - North America
+ - - US Politics
+ - - Canadian Politics

My point was not to restrict WAB's scope, but to better organize it. Of course name's of categories will be different.

I don't know what the real world rules are for those in charge, but I wouldn't doubt that a medical section could possibly open the forum up to some kind of liability. Kid comes on asking about something medical, gets some bad words from someone and gets hisself killed (way not impossible). . . . .someone comes knocking at yer door.

What about a line of small clocks (smaller than the one below) that can tell us what time it is in different parts of the world? Like they have on newspapers and tv-stations. I tend to forget that kind of information. There are some free downloads on the net for homepages like this one. I thought the clocks could sit on the front page and tell us whether it's night or day for the people we discuss with...

Link: http://www.clocklink.com/ENG/gallery.htm

<script src="http://www.clocklink.com/embed.js"></script><script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">obj = new Object;obj.clockfile = "Roosevelt001-gray.swf";obj.TimeZone = "CET";obj.width = 150;obj.height = 150;obj.Place = "";obj.wmode = "transparent";showClock(obj);</script>

Turn the middle east section into a middle east/central asia/africa section (which I use it for anyways seeing as no one else posts news there). Or turn it into a combined middle east/africa and turn the iraq section into a iraq/afghanistan.

My two cents.

I think it would be an excellent idea if we instituted a self-imposed moratorium on posting times, so that we could spend more time with our lovely and long suffering spouses, who are oh-so-very patient with our endless posting and reading on the board. As a matter of fact, we should all be bringing presents and chocolates to the afore-mentioned spouses every day, and tell them how wonderful and beautiful they are every few minutes.

Or perhaps there are already ways to do all of this and I'm just stoopid?

You should already have some of those options

The Search field should appear at the top of the thread, and include Advanced Search options.

LOL. No... was thinking something along the line of skin change, etc. :) Well I like colors ! A lot. A new skin on the debate might look good. Perhaps we can find examples "out there", that can serve as a model ? There is a lot of examples on v/bulletins homepages. One has to click around in the threads to find them:

How about an insults forum? You know, where members such as our many military luminaries could go and call each other names without crapping out otherwise interesting forums?
There could be prizes for best insult:biggrin:

Yeah, I've used the search on here, and it didn't help me much. Which of the mentioned options are already available?

Our main focus is Current, World and Military Affairs.

I'm not sure what you mean...

1) Searching within threads, rather searching the entire message board.
2) Searching for within your search for posts by individual members.
3) Search for phrases, rather than keywords.

Not to beat a dead horse here but, dont people get hurt in war and in the military in general? Thus wouldn't it be paramount to get them back into good health to continue fighting/working? Wouldnt that therefore make medical knowledge important? (I dont in any way mean this in a hostile way ;) )

All very true, but ultimately outside the main focus of the Board.

On the other hand, both the Pub and Current Events are both excellent places to place such subjects.

Well there ya go. Right in front of me. Like I said, I'm stoopid.

That answers the first two. What about phrases? Like how you put something in quotation marks in Google and it searches for the entire phrase? Is that hiding in plain sight somewhere too?

On another forum they had a week long 'battle'. I am the admin there so I had to edit the odd post so that the discussion remained calm.

I would've poured oil to the fire if it was at WAB tho! (Sorry Ironduke!)

He made an unsupported claim in contradiction to all the publicly avaiable information refused to admit he was wrong, and then to "boost" his image posted a bunch of BS pics that might or might not have shown him (faces were edited) having a hand in naval, air, armor, and black ops, and sniping as well as claiming to be in the know form the inside on the Arjun project.

If he had simply said "well thier planning a CIT for the Arjun Mk II" it would have been a non issue. But he insisted and still does that the Arjun beign inducted into Indian service has a CIT. It has a much more limited daylight fair weather only commanders panoramic site.

He also apperantly made some claims about the Lahat ATGM being fitted to the Arjun. He claims he revealed this before it wa spublic domain, since I wasn't around for his claim I can't say. But the info has been public since Feb 2004 http://www.defense-update.com/events/2004/summary/defexpo04armor.htm

and also talked about on bharat-rakshak from 5 feb 2004 on PDF from Feb 23 2004 and in the Indian papers since June of 2004

Like I said it just rubbed me the wrong way.
