  • M24 (sniper rifle) question

I have some questions about the M24 sniper rifle:

    1) How is it loaded (individual bullets, clips, etc)?
    2) What kind of bullets does it fire?
    3) Can the scope be removed?
    4) How expensive would it be for a civilian to buy one?

looking at one i would say either a bandoller or bullets. no to removing the scope but i dont know. a high price to buying one and not sure on what bullets

It is a Bolt Action Rifle that carries five rounds that are to my knowledge loaded individually. It fires 7.62 x 51 mm Cartridge and a good sniper can hit a target in excess of 1000 meters.

You would probley have to have it custom made or something.

            Buy a Remington 700, that's what the M24 is a modification of.

Sorry i didn't see this post earlier.

The M-24 fires from an internal 5 rd magazine, weighs 12.1lbs without optics(unloaded), and uses a dove-tailed mounting system.

Standard optic is the M-3A Leopold unit(10x), but any optic in the US infantry arsenal can be mounted as well.

                  Changing optics requires a re-zero.

Overall it is a very good weapon, but is severely hampered by the lack of a detatchable box magazine.

I prefer the M-21 myself, though the M-24 is definitely more accurate.

Weighing in (flame suit on.): The M21 and M24 are nothing more or less than quality rifles that have been 'touched' to make them as accurate as possible while remaining usable in the field (weight & durability issue) The .308 is a fine, balistically efficient cartridge.

                    Here goes:

ANY good rifle with good optics can be massaged to shoot under 1/2 MOA, painted green and will do the same job.

It isn't the rifle, it's the skill and courage of the man behind the rifle. It starts with certain physical attributes and talents, and becomes somethiing rare and admirable with training and dedication. None of which can be purchased at the local sporting goods store (or anywhere else) for any amount of money.

That's what makes those that have "been-there, done-that" special.

Besides, green rifles are butt ugly!

Green rifles ARE but ugly. ;)

The .308 is actually pretty lame as a sniping cartridge, though adequate to the task for the most part.

A custom built m-21 in .25-06 would make me drool...

PS...i've seen the master sniper instructors shoot under 1/4 MOA with the M-24. Quite impressive to behold for a mere mortal such as myself.

                        I've never quite managed 1/2 MOA, (5/8" 3 shots)

I really like the .308 It works at any range I'm ever likely to use it at.

If only God had seen fit to issue me a decent set of eyeballs...sigh...
