South Asia is home to more than half of the world's poorest people and it has the lowest average GDP of any of the world's major geographic regions. India, the largest of the seven South Asian countries with a population of over a billion people, now has the largest number of hungry people in the world, with widespread poverty continuing to plague the lives of its citizenry. If poverty remains unchecked in India, the extent of suffering resulting from this neglect would be comparable in severity to Sub-Saharan Africa and exceed it in quantitative terms.

One good reason for your demand?
I have not written this article. If we can discuss everything else in world why cannt we discuss the spreading hunger and actions of government spending billions on arms. ??????????

Anyone who think the facts in this article are false can dispute that.

The problem isn't lack of food but diet. A large majority of the people in the country are vegetarians thus that increases the burden on agriculture.
India is the largest exporter of beef but consumption is minimal.
Also 24% of population is under the poverty line thus their PPP is low and therefore can't afford high calorie diet.In 1990, 40% of population in India was under the poverty line and now its 24%. 10 million are pulled out of the poverty line in India every year and the rate would increase in the coming years.

Agriculture output has substantially increased in the past decade and the government is working to get 10million hectare land under cultivation. Private sector investment is been introduced into farming to increase productivity and decrease wastage.

Hope that answer all your queries.:)

Well who ever it is has the full right to post whatever he has to say with facts...
We should just point out the steps taken by the government to get rid out this mess.
There is no denying that India is poor but he/she fails to see the progress it has made. 10 million being pulled out of poverty is not an easy task but he/she likes to only point at the negative aspect rather than the positive.
Concrete steps have been taken by the government regarding poverty, illiteracy, caste discrimination and health care.
50% reservation in jobs and higher education for backwards classes,Tele-medicine,IT education, Rural development schemes etc.etc... are just a few of them

See SLASH, this moron did not understand a word of what you said and he is not interested.

What these guys don't understand is we do know the problems faced by India, be it Proverty, AIDS, economic imbalance, etc etc. But we are trying to resolve the issues and succeding in some, and failing in some others. By pretending that these problem do not exist, they don't go away.

Now what the f**k these things have to do with Pakistan and who in his right mind want to invade and occupy that sorry excuse for a country?

Hey Slash, Its the same AndrewS/Jana/Feline/Xplore. Evil doesn't stays quiet for long.

Doesn't matter.

It is a rather interesting interlude to observe this person in total disarray with his own posts.

I will however concede that education and awareness of the world at large has not reached some unfortunate corners of this Planet Earth.

Please contribute to the education of this poor soul. It would be a very noble thing to do.

Explore,

Have you read the whole article?

It is too revealing for your comfort, is it not for it it to be reproduced in full?

Or are you the epitome of abject poverty yourself that you cannot pay the subscription to see the whole article?

Ok let me try this once. Here is the data of proverty level, statewise breakdown.

Proverty level in 1973/4 (All India figure) is 55%, reduced to 26.10% in 1999/2000 and projected to be at 19.34% at 2006-7. Please note that population almost doubled in the same period. Now the ecomomic reforms started in only in 90's thats one impressive performance.
