U.S. warns Iran on al Qaeda suspects

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Iran must extradite jailed al Qaeda captives and crack down on others still at large who may be fomenting attacks on the United States, a senior U.S. official said on Saturday.

The official renewed White House demands that Tehran, which said on Friday it would put on trial a dozen al Qaeda captives, should instead hand them over to their countries of origin so that they could be interrogated about plans for future attacks.

He said Washington feared al Qaeda members were still operating in Iran.

"The Iranians need to think very carefully before they allow a group of senior al Qaeda members to operate on their territory while they foment attacks against the United States or our allies," the official said.

"It would not be in their interests long-term, in terms of trying to improve their relations with the United States."

The official was speaking to reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where Vice President Dick Cheney earlier urged Europe to join the United States in promoting democracy in Iran and the Arab world.

Until Friday, Iran had not said what it planned to do with al Qaeda militants believed to have fled there from Afghanistan when the United States invaded that country after the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Iran has never confirmed the identity of the suspects, who according to Western intelligence and Saudi sources may include al Qaeda's security chief and a son of its leader, Osama bin Laden.
