Terror accused Mahdani most valuable ally for Left, Cong
RAJEEV PIPosted online: Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at 0000 hrs Print Email

KOCHI, JULY 24:If the DMK government in Tamil Nadu is arranging for 1998 Coimbatore blast accused Abdul Nasser Mahdani’s Ayurvedic massages, the Left and the Congress in Kerala have been doing the stretching—prostrate at his feet.

Three months ago, the CPM sent T K Hamsa, its MP from Manjeri, on a supposedly discreet mission to Coimbatore to get Mahdani to make his outfit, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), openly pitch for the Left in the Assembly polls. This was vital for the Left to build temporary bridges with a reasonable chunk of the Muslim votebank that wouldn’t touch it.

Hamsa did an undercover job — careful even to keep his popular name under wraps. And once this visit was exposed, the Left refused to confirm that he had gone as its official emissary.

When asked to explain this, Hamsa told The Indian Express: “The party leadership did not ask me to meet Mahdani. I went on my own because his human rights were being seriously violated, I wanted to express my sympathies.”

So why didn’t he identify himself? “I didn’t tell anyone I am an MP because jail officials would not have let me in if I did. I went in as a common man.”

    Not just Hamsa.

Another emissary from the Left at Coimbatore jail was the rebel Muslim League man in the CPM camp, T K Jaleel, who later won from Kuttipuram with substantial PDP help.

But did the Left woo Mahdani or was it vice versa? ‘‘What does it matter? The reality is the Left was greatly helped in this poll by both Mahdani’s personal charisma and the PDP’s organizational strength,’’ Poonthura Swaraj, Mahdani’s second in command, told The Indian Express.

This is not the first Left overture to Mahdani, though. In the early nineties, Marxist guru EMS Namboodiripad surprised Kerala when he compared this fire-breathing cleric on crutches with Mahatma Gandhi, saying he could not be untouchable to the Left because he believed in his religion.

That was when this man looked like he would straddle a good deal of the Muslim political space that the Muslim League in the Congress fold during the post-Babri anger was beginning to vacate. Muslims in Kerala had traditionally leaned away from the Left, and EMS’s revelation was when the CPI(M) was in one of its deep ideological ferments over deciding on its approach to the elusive Muslim vote bank.

To avert trouble, Mahdani was arrested on a communal incitement charge — he used to get charged with that often — and was thereafter promptly handed over to Coimbatore police to be made an accused in the blasts case.

This was while EK Nayanar’s CPI(M)-led Government was in power. The Left, of course, hastily washed its hands of even slamming the Congress for sidling up to him in two successive polls.

Eight years later, the man accused of masterminding a serial blast that killed 59, and maimed many more is now a political idiom, a human rights symbol, and a significant tilter of fortunes in Kerala politics.

The PDP had grown large enough not to worry any more about its congenital taint — it is the re-worked version of the Islamic Sevak Sangh, a barely concealed communal outfit that Mahdani ran before it was banned.

Top on the PDP’s political agenda, naturally, has been getting its supremo released from jail. The Congress-led UDF garnered its votes in the 2001 polls promising to do just that.

A K Antony, and then his successor Oommen Chandy, did make some noise about their doing everything to persuade the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to let him out on parole.

That did not, however, wash well with the PDP — especially not after the Tamil Nadu Government submitted to the Chennai Court a faxed missive from the Antony Government that clearly said letting Mahdani out would endanger law and order in Kerala.

‘‘The Congress Government cheated us. It was their faxed missive that Jayalalithaa used to clamp a ban on Mahdani’s movement outside of the jail. We can’t forgive them for that,’’ Poonthura Siraj affirms.

The PDP was surely assuming a key political profile, while leveraging a slew of human rights outfits to join the chorus for Mahdani’s parole on health grounds — the man had a leg blown off early in his career by an RSS bomb, and was a hypertensive diabetic. In September last year, a bunch of suitably armed men boarded a Tamil Nadu government bus leaving Kochi, shooed out all passengers and set it aflame, shouting slogans for him.

Soon, the 2006 polls were coming up and almost every political leader of some consequence was speaking for Mahdani. V S Achuthanandan, then the opposition leader, was going to town about how he had written to Jayalalithaa seeking an audience to discuss Mahdani but didn’t get a reply.

Chandy was talking about his ill luck at not being able to make Amma budge, and how the giveaway fax that his Government sent was actually a mistake.

That was when President A P J Abdul Kalam came down to Kerala. The state MLAs, both of the Left and the Congress bandwagon, immediately drew up a petition and submitted it to Kalam, demanding Mahadani’s release — more than 100 out of the state’s 140 MLAs signed it.

More was to follow, on the day of Holi on March 15, the Congress-led Government’s Water Resources Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan tabled a resolution in the Assembly. It urged the Centre to “intervene on humanitarian grounds in the case of Mahdani, languishing under trial in Coimbatore Central Jail for the last seven years’’, and for ‘‘urgent steps to provide good medical treatment to him”.

Now, the Opposition-Left wanted to do one better. It asked for the resolution to be made to read that Mahdani be released on parole, not just given medical treatment. This was incorporated and passed — not a single MLA opposed it.
The next few weeks put him in even more important light. The PDP was angry with the Congress, but had still not agreed to incline Left.

Days before the Assembly poll in May, Mahdani broke his silence to send a statement from his cell exhorting his ranks to work for the Left — for the first time.

The Left won comfortably in many Muslim pockets that it could never have dared to hope for earlier. The last few weeks had seen Left ministers and leaders making a beeline for Mahdani’s home to meet and promise his wife to get him out, tagging TV cameras along.

Achuthanandan talked to Karunanidhi urging to get him out but the latter, it seems, has gone only halfway. As of now, he’s getting the massages.

    Wife surrenders, gets bail

COIMBATORE: Soofiya, Mahdani’s wife, against whom a non-bailable warrant was pending, surrendered on Monday before a judicial magistrate here. Soofiya, as reported by The Indian Express, was allowed access to Mahdani despite the warrant. On two personal sureties, the magistrate granted bail to Soofiya, who has been asked to appear before the court on every hearing date and posted the case for August 11.

She faces cases under Sections 353 (preventing public servants from discharging their duties) and 506 (intimidating and threatening dire consequences).

DMK is a regional party in Tamil Nadu. They are supposed to espouse the cause of the Tamils. They were primarily responsible for unseating the Congress from Tamil Nadu. It is lead by a corrupt bastard whose son is also a rapist....

I dont see the need to.He is the 14th accused in the blasts case. The case is being fast-tracked with hearings happening almost everyday. Witness have already finished their part and now the prosecution is presenting its argument(They're having a hearing today).

The pigs would be sentenced in a matter of months.

Nobody wants him out.It was the CPIm led govt which got him arrested and presented it to jayalaltiha. And sicne then he is rotting in the jail, now as is heard he soon going to die a normal death as he is suffering from kidney infection and whole lot of other sickness.

There was a major rally held in trivandrum some time ago which was led by the current leader of PDP Poondura sooraj. The PDP supporters went wild and started destroying pvt and govt properties on the march route and thats all that was needed for the Kerala Police to get into action. They are notorious for going after the leaders who stage the rally than the supporters.Suraj was missing for 4 days after the rally and then emerged in the trivandrum press club accusiing that he was in police camp for last 4 days and they tortured him badly.

DMK and the court has already said that he will not be released to go to Kerala for the so called massage. He is supposed to receive his massage inside Coimabtore Central Jail possibly by a male

Actually the Kerala politicians do want Madhani to be out, Kerala CM met Karunanidhi and requested him, but Karunanidhi is a sly fish and he just pointed out that justice will take its course.

                          Here we go,

Abdul Nasser Madhani leader thanks Tamil Nadu, Kerala CMs
Coimbatore, Jul 12: Kerala-based People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader and a key accused in the 1998 serial bomb blasts, Abdul Nasser Madhani today thanked Tamil Nadu chief Minister M Karunanidhi for directing officials to arrange for ayurveda treatment for his various ailments in the Central prison here itself.

In a release circulated through his lawyers, Madhani, lodged in the prison for the last eight years, thanked the state government and Karunanidhi, in helping to get treatment on 'humanitarian grounds.' He also thanked Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan for taking up the issue with Karunanidhi personally and also the doctors of Arya Vaidya Pharmacy for providing the treatment.

Kerala is making all sorts of records, this one a unianimous resolution to get Madhani released, IDIOTS.

                          Resolution on Madhani
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Assembly today passed a resolution requesting the Centre to adopt a "humanitarian attitude" and grant parole to People's Democratic Party leader Abdul Nazer Madhani, imprisoned in connection with Coimbatore bomb blasts case.

The resolution passed without any debate pointed out that Madhani, due to long period of imprisonment, was suffering from various diseases and demanded that the Centre take steps to provide him necessary medical treatment.

Madhani is currently lodged in the Coimbatore Central prison.

                            KERALA’S FALLGUY

                            Anyone recognise this man?

Accused of plotting to kill LK Advani, the undertrial Abdul Nazar Madani was used as a vote-catching tool by both the LDF and UDF. Post-elections, he had no takers, reports J. Gopikrishnan

                            Pawn, Victim? Madani

In the recent poll campaign, Madani’s photo was more visible than Karl Marx in the LDF posters
Abdul Nazar Madani, prime accused in the Coimbatore blasts case, continues to be the magic wand the state’s rival alliances have been using to lure Muslim votes in elections and forget once the ballots are counted.

True to this, Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan has been claiming credit for Madani getting proper medical treatment in Tamil Nadu. This announcement came after his recent visit to Chennai when he called upon his counterpart for the same.

The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) hails it as its achievement. But the Madani issue was also exploited by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). And they too, like the LDF, had promised his release, but Madani is yet to be let out of prison.

Accused in the Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case on February 14, 1998 that killed 58 people, Madani has been imprisoned for the past eight years as an undertrial. The blasts are believed to have targeted BJP leader and then Home Minister LK Advani. Born in southern Kerala, young Abdul Nazar became a Madani (a degree conferred by Islamic institutions) after preliminary schooling in the early 80s. He shot into limelight in 1990 by forming the Islamic Sevak Sangh (ISS). His communally sensitive speeches marginalised the Muslim League in Kerala. He was also the victim of a bomb blast near his party headquarters in 1992 and lost his left leg. His followers and police allege it was a rss plot, but the Parivar denies the claim.

Soon after the Babri Masjid demolition, Madani disbanded the ISS and formed the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to forge a broad Muslim-dalit-backward alliance and started fielding candidates in elections. His firebrand style captured Muslim votes.

Madani’s rising career was watched by two tactful leaders: the Communist patriarch EMS Namboodiripad and Congress kingmaker K. Karunakaran. Both needed his help for sidelining the then mighty Muslim League and they used him.

While EMS equated Madani with Mahatma Gandhi, Karunakaran allegedly prevented the police from stopping him from his communally sensitive speeches. But the Coimbatore blasts upset the political manoeuvrings of the two old horses. The Tamil Nadu police booked Madani for masterminding the blasts, his name disclosed by an Al Umma activist during interrogation. He confessed that Madani helped him and a colleague travel to Pakistan via Bangkok for isi training.

                            USED AND ABUSED?
                            • Madani shot to fame by establishing the Islamic Sevak Sangh in 1990
                            • His communally sensitive speeches marginalised the Muslim League significantly
                            • Both the LDF and UDF used him to gain Muslim votes. Was arrested during the LDF regime in 1998
                            • Kerala CM Oommen Chandy sought his parole in 2005, failed.
                            • President received mass petition in his support from legislators

Back then, Kerala was ruled by the LDF and Tamil Nadu by the dmk. A day before the Tamil Nadu police arrived to arrest Madani, its Kerala counterparts had arrested him for an inflammatory speech, made six years ago. He was handed over to the TN police on March 31, 1998.

As the trial wound on, the main accused Al Umma activists got parole but Madani didn’t. During the 2001 Assembly elections, the UDF promised Madani’s early release but failed to actualise it. Similarly, before the 2005 polls, the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy led a delegation to the then TN cm J. Jayalalithaa to seek his parole. The effort did not yield any result. Meanwhile, the Kerala Assembly passed a unanimous resolution for Madani’s fair trial. President APJ Abdul Kalam received a mass petition from Kerala legislators, when he addressed the Assembly.

Though the LDF government had turned him in, it was their turn to use his arrest as a poll issue. And during the campaign, Madani’s photo was preferred over Karl Marx’s in the LDF election posters.

The verdict in Madani’s trial is expected by the end of this year. Grossly underweight, 41-year-old Madani suffers from high blood sugar and blood pressure. The way his family and followers have conducted his case also spells doubts over their intentions. Allegations about influx of funds from the Gulf to meet his legal expenses have also done the rounds. Meanwhile, his wife filed a habeas corpus, which was rejected. It seems a jailed Madani may be more valuable for Kerala’s politicians than a free Madani.
