  • Most Medal of Honors in a single battle ?

While almost everyone knows that the 1879 Battle of Rorke's Drift in SOuth Africa holds the record for the greatest number of Victoria Crosses (11) won in a single action in the British military what is the battle in our history where the most Medal of Honors were awarded?

Last I heard so many VCS were given because that was the only award to give at the time...
To sit down with these men and deal with them as the representatives of an enlightened and civilized people is to deride ones own dignity and to invite the disaster of their treachery - General Matthew Ridgway

And the government had to salvage what they could from a disaster. Without some PR help right quick, the war may have ended after Isandlhwana.

That said, though, there WERE real heroics at Rorke's Drift.

Im sure quite a few at Isandlwana would have gotten the VC as well except they were KIA and the British military dident award the VC to men who were killed in the act of doing whatever they did to get the award until 1906 which is when Mevill and Coghill (the 2 officers from the 1/24 who saved the battalion colors at Islandwana).

Most likely Iwo Jima. 27 MoH were awarded.

Of course this is after the reforms of the early 20th century.

During the Civil War every soldier in the 27th Maine was awarded the medal for 4 days of guarding Washington DC on 30 June 1863. So 864 Medals were awarded for that act.
          (All were purged in 1917)
