    disgraceful end of legend
If at first you don't succeed, call it v1.0!

I wonder why he did it.

To do that in front of billions, on you last game after an illustrious career, in the biggest game in sport with the hopes of a whole nation on your back is just inexplicably moronic.

I heard the guy has a history of losing his temper on the field.

That Italian player was the player of the game. He kocked out France's best player when the score was tied, in the biggest game in his career, all with just a couple of words.

Zidane was a moron. He lost control. He couldn't control what the other team does on the field. But he could control his own actions. He failed. He let his team down and his country down.

Since I don't know what he said, I can't say anything for sure, but my first impression is that while the Italian player is a punk, and he may have deserved what he got, Zidane most certainly deserved what he got. Regardless of the provocation, the team comes first. I still respect the guy for his great contribution to football, but this really saddens me. I hope everybody can forgive and forget.

Hardly, from what we know it was pretty bad, and it was persistant. Zidane is only human. And Materatzzi is a scum of a player. He should thank god it was not Eric Cantona, then he would have had a busted skull.
I blame the ref, he should have tried to find out what happened, and then acted. And Materatzzi should have been sent off as well.

Calling Zidane a Moron, because of just a few seconds of stupidity..is the stupidest thing ever.

What about the zillions of seconds where he played like a true legend helping his team and country win trophies and heartsof millions.

Every player has a black mark in his career, its sad that it was reserved for Zidane for this last moment.

I was supporting Italy, but was totally dejected and couldnt even celeberate the italian victory due to Zizous dismassal.

                Real sad

                  Zidane is a moron.

We punish our soldiers for a few seconds of stupidity, eventhough they see their buddies blown up everyday by terrorists.

Self defense is one thing. Assault and battery is another. Zidane is a profesional and he should act like one. Materazzi talks trash, talk back at him. He pulls dirty little tricks, do it back. If he can manage not to get caught, so can Zidane. He wants to do something blatant, go right ahead. Be prepared to pay the price.

Eight years ago, Zidane was red-carded for stomping on an opponent while playing Saudi Arabia. At this World Cup he collected two yellow cards and was suspended for France's third group match against Togo.

Five years ago, Zidane was also red-carded for butting Jochen Kientz in a Champions League match for Juventus against Hamburger SV. A year later, his volley gave Real Madrid its ninth European title.
Looks like he has a history of on-field violence.

The Italians played a dirty game. But what happened. It was not a spontaneous headbutt, but was a very deliberative move. He must have been bugged.

Oh yes, he was annoyed to high hell by Materazzi from the looks of the video footage. It was definitely a deliberate attack. He got the red card as he deserved.

Zidane is a moron because he let his emotions take over his game. He allowed the Italian to get under his skin in perhaps the most important game of his entire career. He let his team down. He let France down.

I play hockey. There are assholes and dirty players all over the place. I get annoyed also and sometimes I do want to hurt someone. But I don't do that because I know it would hurt my team. What I do is plenty of dirty little things to get back at them. I never initiate, only retaliate. I'm as clean as my opponent. If I can do it, so can a professional athlete.

He's responsible for his own actions, and I felt the refs acted in the correct manner on this issue. He had no right to respond to Materazzi's taunting in that manner. Now he's disgraced himself, especially since it's his last game. What a sore loser. Instead of going out like a gentleman and a professional with dignity he decided to act like a child and was ejected from the game in shame. I have no sympathy for him.

what possible effect did that have on the match? All that happened was France took penalties without him, he let himself down, nobody else.

it'sa shame he went out that way.
