are the IAS and IPS still relevant today? or they are a vestige of the past which has no rationale for its existance?
also if anyone can post links about history of indian administration especially the 1919 Montagu-Chelmsford report, which formed the blueprint for administration in future.
How is it in Pakistan, do you have these/similar civil services?

The IAS/IFS - yes they are relavent, for it is they who run the country and advise the idiots who get elected.

The IPS - not relavent, they have shown profoundness for being incompetent leaders barring a few exceptions.

    Cheers!...on the rocks!!

      Otherway round. Scrap IAS(not IFS).

What's the alternative, if there is no IPS?

Currently the IPS is discriminatory towards the state police cadre, it has to be amalgamated and made state specific, and central selection for orgs like CBI and IB. Let state cadre officers be responsible, just improve the selection procedure.

        Cheers!...on the rocks!!

State cadre are in an awful mess, as you implied. Decentralization may work in certain states but imagine Bihar and UP! .

Better, dismantle each distirct into a tiny state. At least some districts will be spared from riff-raff from the other.

states like bihar , up seriously need presidential rule to get atleast livable!!!

recently when presidents rule was imposed on bihar , many corrupt babus , officlas were either dismissed /transfered.....but alas politicians were successful in bringing back a govt.

hear what lalu prasad yadav said recently about bihar , he was accusing CM nitish kumar about his policies on bringing investments in the sate:

" whom is nitish trying to fool? who will invest in clay-covered sand in bihar? those who invest will be finished"

what he didnt notice is that his dialogue actually highlights the misgovernance of his own RJD administration.

nitish kumar is atleast 100000000 times better than lalu prasad yadav.for 15 years bihar was like his personal backyard in his house LOL !!!

The North suffered the worst under the "foreign yoke"- and the side-effects are yet to wear off. A tendency to anger or get riled up, plus all the usual stuff- poverty, illiteracy..& lovable politicians who continue to divide and rule.

It will take another fifty odd years for the BIMARU states to truly improve beyond their urban areas. And for Bihar, even the cities are battlegrounds.

I hope that was not a serious suggestion since it is neither practical nor will it bring in any substantial improvement. If anything, it will stretch the resources of public administration even more.

That's an excuse. Punjab is 2% or India and is the bread basket of the nation, and it also happens to be in the north that has sufferred equally.

Its the attitude of the people and the leaders that they elect. A state like UP that has a few of the finest educational institutions in the country is going to the dogs ever since the regional parties came to power.

                        Cheers!...on the rocks!!

come on archer, both north and south have suffered equally under the tyrany of british rule. The only thing that differs now is the south beleived in hard work and knowledge and it came out of poverty. You can see what south was like in 1970's if you visit orissa

Nope, more power to the former district(now a state). Also more power to central govt. Jharkahnd is definitely better off when outside Bihar. So is Uttarkhand. Same argument(stretching resources) was put forward during their split.
