Barelvi leaders mull grand party led by Pir Pagaro

    By Mubasher Bukhari

LAHORE: After bomb blasts at Karachi’s Nishtar Park, the biggest ever terrorist attack against Barelvis in Pakistan, sect leaders have begun a move to merge all Braelvi political parties, shrine caretakers and small groups into one unit - Grand Sunni Party (GSP) - to safeguard their interests at all levels. They are trying to convince Pir Pagaro, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) chief, to lead the GSP.

Sources told Daily Times that some Barelvi leaders had begun efforts to merge all groups to form a single Barelvi party after the 2002 elections when they saw that the Barelvi’s biggest representative group, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan, could not win seats from the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal platform, despite the fact that Barelvis are a majority in Pakistan. Instead, Deobandi parties won a considerable number of seats in the elections.

“They stepped up efforts for a single party after the Barelvi-Deobandi conflict in Bara, where the tension between Deobandi scholar Mufti Munir Shakir and Barelvi leader Pir Saifur Rehman claimed around 16 lives, and most victims were from the latter’s group,” sources added.

Barelvi leaders and scholars held congregations in various cities to discuss the idea of a single party, which was finally approved by a public meeting at Minar-e-Pakistan on March 27. “The April 11 bombings of an Eid Mildun Nabi congregation in Karachi, claiming 57 lives, has forced Barelvi leaders to take it seriously,” sources said.

They said that former MMA president Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani and Dr Tahirul Qadri were the only persons who could protect Barelvis’ interests in parliament, but after the death of Maulana Noorani and resignation of Dr Qadri from the National Assembly, there was nobody to talk about Barelvis’ rights.

Jamaat Ahle Sunnat Pakistan chief Pir Riaz Hussain Shah and JUP leaders Ans Noorani, Maulana Turabul Haq and Pir Saifur Rehman are in contact with Pir Pagaro. “He … can play an important role for unity among Barelvis,” a religious leader said, but he did not say whether Pir Pagaro had replied to the proposal.

Pir Riaz Hussain Shah said: “We will further discuss the one party idea at the Sunni Conference in Faisalabad on April 29.” He urged Barelvi groups to unite otherwise the Barelvi majority would be converted into a minority in Pakistan.

So, the Sunnis are get their act together? And Musharrf is helping them. First, the Sipahi is legitimised and now these Sunni Mullah nanny goats are herding together to make the biggest flock under the chief shepherd, Pir Pagaro!!!

If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

Stand by for the most holy war to the times, the multistarrer vistavision and technicolour grand opus from Pakistan, "The Longest Beard"!!!

Jokes apart, I am surprised that these Mullahmen find the smallest excuse to flex their muscle and what is even more surprising is that the Pakistanis meekly accept such tomfoolery.

I wonder if the religion actually indoctrinates one to be power hungry. History indicates that most Moslems (the Kings, courtier etc) crave for power.

In fact, the Sunni Shia divide is all because of a power-lust as to who will succeed Mohammed! The remainder religious hoohah is all a coverplan for respectability to a raw power lust!

Anyway with the Sipahi legalised and the Sunni Jamboree Party, it seems the requiem for the Shias has been sung.
