  • woman raped by taxi driver

KOLKATA: When 22-year-old Sita Biswas (name changed) landed at Howrah station on Saturday evening following a tiff at home, she probably thought she would return to her widowed mother in Burdwan in a few days. On her arrival, she wanted to go to Hastings where one of her acquaintances lives.

Alone and lost in an alien city, Sita, however, found a saviour in a taxi driver who extended a helping hand and offered to take her to Hastings.

Taking her around the city in circles, the taxi finally came to a halt at the winding Prem Chand Boral Street, notorious for its dingy brothels.

The "Bengali-speaking" cabbie took her into a cramped ground-floor room of house number 79 and raped her, police said.

The driver probably has a squint. Leaving a severely injured Sita nearly unconscious, the driver — in his mid-20s — slipped out on Sunday morning.

In a state of shock, Sita stepped out of the hellhole a few hours later. She was spotted by a Bowbazar police station patrol team while she was loitering in the streets.

When she arrived at Muchipara police station, she was bleeding profusely. The police immediately took her for a medical examination, which confirmed rape.

Though she couldn't recall the exact location in Hastings where she had originally intended to go, Sita — who was taken back to Prem Chand Boral Street by the police in the evening — identified the two-storey building and the room where she was raped.

She also identified 50-year-old Chandra Prasad Yadav as the man who had let out the room to the cabbie around 1.30 am on Sunday.

The police arrested him for abetting the crime and are looking for the rapist. A resident of Moralpara in Burdwan, Sita landed in the city after a squabble with her widowed mother who works in a jewellery store.

A police officer said Sita would be produced in court on Monday. Some members of Durbar Mahila Samanway Samiti, the apex body of sex workers in Sonagachchi, landed up at the police station alleging foul play by the cops.
