Gen Durrani clears dues to avoid PAC scrutiny
By Maryam Hussain
ISLAMABAD: Lt General (r) Asad Durrani, a former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief and ambassador, has paid the government Rs 325,113 after the auditor general found irregularities in payments made to him 12 years ago when he headed the Pakistani mission in Germany.
Gen Durrani promptly made the payment in question after the Foreign Office advised him that an audit para relating to the irregularities, which occurred during his posting at Bonn in 1994, had been referred to the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), where public representatives could take up the matter in front of the media. A PAC sub-committee headed by MNA Kunwar Khalid Younis examines audit objections related to the Foreign Office.
According to an official document regarding the recovery of money from the former ISI chief, the auditor general wrote to the Foreign Office pointing out the irregularities in payments made to the Pakistan embassy at Bonn when Gen Durrani was posted there. Gen Durrani was informed of this by the Foreign Office, and he then paid the amount. The auditor general then asked the PAC not to bring up the audit para during the committee meeting because Gen Durrani had repaid the money.
Gen Durrani is one of the few generals who was close to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, under whom he served as ISI chief, but he has also served as ambassador to Saudi Arabia under the government of Gen Pervez Musharraf. He was a key player in the Supreme Court case regarding the payment of Rs 140 million to politicians on the orders of former army chief Gen Aslam Beg in an alleged bid to form an alliance against Bhutto.
