  • Blasts in Delhi

Two reportedly dead and at least thirty others have been injured when twin blasts went off in famous ‘Jama Masjid’ of Old Delhi, according to Indian media.

Sources quoting eyewitnesses told that the blasts occurred at about 1700 (IST). Several fire tenders and ambulances rushed to the blast site. However, shops around the mosque were asked to shut down.

According to reports, the bomb squad defused a third bomb which was planted inside the mosque.

maybe some terrorists aren't happy with the peace talks going on between India-Pakistan. Maybe this is all being done so the governments of both these countries start suspecting each other and return to good ol' hostilities...

Exactly, by analysts in Pakistan this is seen as an intervention by some third party to disrupt the peace between Shias and sunnis

Jama Masjid is an important Mazjid owing to its historical antecedents.

To categorically state that it was targeted to incite Shia - Sunni rivalry would be wrong. If that were the aim, the ideal area would be Lucknow, which has the history for the same and where such tensions are easy to foment by "interested" parties!

Kanpur is another place where the Shia Sunni divide could be better exploited than Delhi, which has a more cosmopolitan air.

Red alerts have been sounded for all such sensitive cities!

The blast occurred after the namaz had been offered. Had it happened when the prayers were in full swing, the casualties would have been astronomical. The timing of the bomb blast is an important factor.

It is most providential that there has been no deaths.

A dastardly attack, nonetheless, it is.

        Compensation has been announced.

Bombs blast and hand grenade attacks have also taken place in Srinagar.

India sadly is in the throes of inspired violence and the worse thing since it is happening nearly everyday, the population is getting de-sensitised and fatalistic.

It is time the Indian rose and fought this menace of daily violence against unsuspecting citizens!

              horrible.

I hope the Muslims don't vent it off on the hindu public. That would be criminal and unjust.

I don't buy that. I think some group was behind this and wanted the Indian Muslims to think that it was the work of Hindus as to incite sectarian violence.

I only can hope that somebody would put a bullet in all Wahabit leaders.

Exactly. The Varanasi blasts didn't see a communal backclash.

So this is a new attempt on the other side of the fence. Disgusting.

Not at all inspite of efforts by "vested" interest within and without the country to do exactly that!

There was no Hindu ire vented on Moslems after the Varanasi temple blast and neither has any Moslem ire vented on Hindus after this blast!

Much to the disgust of those who would be delighted if it were so notwithstanding that such would be criminal and unjust! What ho?

                        Here is a report:

Feud whiff in attack on mosque
                        OUR BUREAU

New Delhi, April 14: Those who mixed a cocktail of common laboratory chemicals and placed them in two packets near the water tank at Jama Masjid wanted only to cause a scare and not hurt anyone, police believe.

Potassium chlorate, sulphur and sulphuric acid stirred together and packed with nuts and bolts can only set off a weak blast, an officer said.

Though security agencies are ready with several theories to explain the motive — including symbolic revenge by Hindu zealots and a terrorist effort to whip up communal strife — the strongest suspicion relates to Shahi Imam’s rivals looking to gain control of the mosque.

“It could be an attempt to malign the Shahi Imam and loosen his grip over the mosque,” an Intelligence Bureau source suggested.

If any of these theories are true, the plotters would have been disappointed. Delhi stayed calm and the Shahi Imam earned praise from Union home minister Shivraj Patil for his appeals for calm after the blasts.

Though the explosions had little direct impact, the second could have sparked a stampede. After the first blast, the people inside the mosque were already tense when the second packet of explosives was discovered.

“Suddenly, we saw another packet lying close to the place where the first blast happened. We were told that it might also blow off and within minutes, there was a second blast. After the second one, everyone started running around,” said Muzaffar Khan, the brother of one of the victims.

It was mosque staff who took the victims to hospital. When police and the bomb disposal squad arrived to search for more bombs, the premises were cordoned off for nearly an hour and traffic restricted on all roads leading to the mosque.

The huge crowd in front of the mosque had turned angry as it was not being allowed to enter the premises. When Delhi police commissioner K.K. Paul arrived, the crowd wouldn’t allow him to enter and he had to use the back gate.

As the bomb squad searched the spot, the police commissioner and the Shahi Imam appealed to the people to leave the premises.

After an hour of searching, the police left. Immediately, crowds started going in for the day’s fourth set of prayers.

Union minister Kapil Sibal, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and several other ministers visited the victims in hospital. The Delhi government announced Rs 50,000 to each injured.

Home ministry sources said intelligence agencies had spoken of possible blasts in mid-April, with several festivals like Good Friday and Id-Milad and Mahavir Jayanti almost coinciding, but did not specify locations.

The Imam has many "friends" and he love power and his political clout!

The concoction for the "bombs" were real amateurish and therefore it could hardly be the work of those who mean business!

Also the timing is to be noted since it was not the time when the Masjid is chockabloc full as I mentioned earlier!

                        Colonel,

                        Not luck.

Internal rivalry with no intent to kill innocents but put the fear of God into the Imam!

As an engineer who is an expert on explosives, you will realise the potency of the bomb from the mixture mentioned in the report.

Bombs and IEDs used by terrorists in India are of great intensity and are meant to devastate and not scare!

In the Gujerat riot, Moslems were kllled and so were Hindus.

The operative word of Tronic was "ignite".

Now, who ignited the issue by burning the train?

Much is said about the Hindu - Moslem divide.

Here is something about Christian Hindu equation:

                            Non-Christians in church flock
                            MITA MUKHERJEE

Like every year, hundreds of people from across the city converged on a 199-year-old church off Baithakkhana market, near Sealdah station, to observe Good Friday.

Interestingly, a sizeable number among the devout at the Church of Our Lady of Dolours (picture on right by Aranya Sen) were non-Christians.

And, to retain this unique character of the church — participation of non-Christians in church activities — the authorities have taken a novel decision: to involve non-Christians in the year-long 200th anniversary celebrations, beginning next year.

“Ours is, perhaps, the only church where large numbers of non-Christians come every day, sit with folded hands in front of the idols and pray,” beamed Father Peter Arulraj, priest of the church.

The main attraction, however, is a statue of “Our Lady”, known as “Mother of Mercy” and believed to be the city’s oldest marine shrine.

“The statue was gifted to the church by a pious lady some time in the beginning of the 20th Century. It was probably washed ashore from a shipwreck and found by the lady on the river bank. The statue has driven a large number of people to visit the church regularly,” Fr Arulraj said.

He cited a number of other examples to prove the popularity of the church among non-Christians. “You will never find the candlesticks of this church unlit. Someone or the other comes in every moment and lights a candle.”

According to him, the church was built at a time when Sealdah had a dense Catholic population. “Now, the count has dwindled to less than 250 families in the entire Sealdah-Baithakkhana belt. But one can find people praying here all day, and many of them are non-Christians. That’s what makes our church unique,” he said.

When Mother Teresa passed away, the local populace, again non-Christian shop-owners, were prompt to commission a statue of her and donate it to the church.

“Our church also boasts a rare collection of wooden and bronze statues of the saints,” Fr Arulraj said.

Baithakkhana, as the area is known, means “a resting place”. It got this name from a huge tree under which a large number of people would come together every evening and pass the time. “In keeping with this historical characteristic, we keep our church gates open all day so that anybody who is tired can sit and rest for a while,” the priest added.

The architecture, too, is remarkable. The church is sound-proof. Engineers and architects who visited the edifice recently said the structure has been built in such a way that silence always reigns in the main section, irrespective of the bustle outside.
                            http://www.telegraphindia.com/archives/archive.html

It is also very interesting that Christians also participate in religious fesitvities of other religions. Like Hindus, they also visit Ajmer Sharif and other dargahs.

Now how many Moslems reciprocate except Moslem politicians?

They can't even if they want to because Islam does not premit idolatry and the millahman can take serious cognisance and cause problems! The mullahmen don't mess with Moslem politicians since the Moslem politicians can make the mullahmens' live hell which the common Moslem cannot!

Christianity and Hinduism is a trifle bindaas about all this and hence have less problems in mixing.
