  • How many of you have hypnic jerk??

A hypnic or hypnagogic jerk is an involuntary muscle twitch (more generally known as myoclonus or a myoclonic twitch) which often occurs during the transition from wakefulness to sleep (see hypnagogia). It is often described as an electric shock or falling sensation, and can cause movement of the body in bed. Hypnic jerks are completely normal, and are experienced by most people, especially when over-tired or sleeping uncomfortably. The exact cause of the sudden jerks is not clear, but there are hypotheses:

I get dreams often in which I'm falling. I wake up, and I've literally fallen off the bed.

Could be because of lack if self-esteem ... inferiority complex.

            "I'm Falling"

Falling dreams are another theme that is quite common in the world of dreams. Contrary to a popular myth, you will not actually die if you do not wake up before your hit the ground during a fall.

As with most common dream themes, falling is an indication of insecurities, instabilities, and anxieties. You are feeling overwhelmed and out of control in some situation in your waking life. This may reflect the way you feel in your relationship or in your work environment. You have lost your foothold and can not hang on or keep up with the hustle and bustle of daily life. When you fall, there is nothing that you can hold on to. You more or less are forced toward this downward motion without any control. This lost of control may parallel a waking situation in your life.

Falling dreams also often reflect a sense of failure or inferiority in some circumstance or situation. It may be the fear of failing in your job/school, loss of status, or failure in love. You feel shameful and lack a sense of pride. You are unable to keep up with the status quo or that you don't measure up.

According to Freudian theory, dreams of falling indicate that you are contemplating giving into a sexual urge or impulse. You maybe lacking indiscretion.

Falling dreams typically occur during the first stage of sleep. Dreams in this stage are often accompanied by muscle spasms of the arms, legs, and the whole body. These sudden contractions, also known as myclonic jerks. Sometimes when we have these falling dreams, we feel our whole body jerk or twitch and we awaken from this jerk. It is thought that this jerking action is part of an arousal mechanism that allows the sleeper to awaken and become quickly alert and responsive to possible threats in the environment.

According to biblical interpretations, dreams about falling have a negative overtone and suggest that man is acting and walking according to his own way of thinking and not those of the Lord.

                Damn.

Ok I've never really thought about my insecurities in great detail, since I never figured I'd have any of those kind of issues. I'm always so sure of what I want, or so sure of what to pursue. You'd seldom see me hesitate.

Hmmm lesser problems with control too... hmmm lesser such dreams too.

And I always figured its a voodoo sign that I'd die falling off! Not reaaaaally afraid of heights either. Just not so much more than the other guy, that is. Can't do any Tom Cruise style flipping from cliffs but won't piss in my pants looking down from the top of Burj Dubai either someday.

Well the only other dream/falling related freaky thing that used to happen (hasn't happened in like 5-6 years) is that I used to get some freaky dream, like something severely bad happens and I wake up all panicky. Just panic, for no apparent reason.

The last time it happened, I woke up and I'm walking all over the house. I'm repeating "Oh **** **** ****, now I have to jump, **** **** ****!". This last time it was freaky since I opened the balcony doors walked out then suddenly came to... And I'm like...... "errr why do I have to jump?" Had no idea, just woke up in panic.

One of the earliest incidents like these I remember happened when I visited Jheel Saif-al-Malook. That lake has several legends attached to it, like so many others. I came back and I woke up in the middle of the night (my cousins tell me this) and I'm like "I wanna go to Jheel Saif-al-Malook" just repeated that over n over. And was heading for the hotel room's balcony.

I don't recall the incident at all. Since I caught a fever the next morning and was in bed for like 3 days. Locals said one of the fairies living there did something.

My own guess is, from observance that this repeatedly happens to me since I don't rest much. Sleep like 3-4 hours a day, drive a lot, usually fighting traffic, talk a lot, and keep myself involved in all kinds of activities, projects.

I had a bad one couple nights back, which made me to look for answers in google. But I always know when I had this jerk, but the good thing is, I sleep right after the "HYPNIC" jerk.

Jay...Dale... I'm just shaking my head trying not to asphyxiate while laughing at that exchange...

I'm REALLY twitchy in my sleep. It's driven girlfriends nuts. Also didn't help that while having a nightmare I squarely punched one in the jaw, completely and sound asleep.

I have very few falling dreams, and I usually bounce and walk away when I land. The ones I hate are where I'm driving in a car, and the steering is sloppy and the breaks don't really work, so I'm careening and smacking into everything...and then I realize to my horror...it's really NOT a dream!

By the way, this "jerk" is very much treatable by medicine.
So in case it bothers you just talk to any psychiatrist. I am not going
to prescribe any on the board.
