I got suckered into a "poker night" with some friends of friends so to speak. I have the rules down, but I only know the most basic of games and I have the impression that there are thousands of variants of poker games/hands around. Does anyone wish to share a few fun and not to complex games they like? I have until this friday.

Five card draw is the type of poker I play the most and is probably the most common to play among friends. Professional poker players play texas holdem, which I suck at.

But they all have the same basic rules, so if you can play one, you can play them all.

Yeah, the basic rules are the same. You make the best hand possible with 5 cards. The variations lie with how you come about those 5 cards. Have fun and good luck. Don't lose too much.

Texas Hold 'em is, as they say, the Cadillac of poker. It's also a ton of fun. The hard part is remembering to fold 75% of your hands.

I play Hold 'em much looser than that, but I also lose a lot, especially to good players, BUT being a little loose can freak out some of the more serious guys too. NO ONE chases a flush in Hold 'em - it's stupid. So I do it to have fun.

Anyway, watch the movie Rounders if you wnat a fun and entertaining intro to Hold 'em.

Omaha Hi Lo is my favorite. It's hold 'em but more complex.

Black Mariah is a good one, as is 7 card stud.

        I miss my poker nights...

Sorry colonel, but you wouldn't be invited. It would be a strictly a one on one game

Five and seven card stud, and draw.

                    Texas hold'em

Anaconda-can have a max of 7 players. It's a high-low game. Each player is delt seven cards. One must pick three cards to pass to left or right(dealer chooses). Then one must try to make the lowest or highest hand possible with five of the seven cards. There is five rounds of betting. Bet and then turn a card over and so on. The People with the highest and lowest hands win. It is possible to take high and low.

Indian Poker- Card is placed on forhead without looking at it. Only the other players can see it. And you can see all their cards. Bet high if you think you have the highest card.

Criss Cross-Like texas but the five cards are laid out in an X. And only one card is turned over at a time. There are five rounds of betting. It is a high low game.

Omaha- Like texas but you are delt four cards and you are only allowed to use two of them and you have to use two of them.

                    Baseball

I played poker frequently. We usually play freestyle. But we also play tourney.

It was even stupider than that, trust me.

I'd never have suspected that a group of adult men could behave like a passle of high school girls.

                      Sad, really.
                      -------------------

But here's a completely brainless stud game to pass the time between serious games:

"Want It? Want It? Got it."

Goal: Be the player with the highest 5 card poker hand or the lowest poker hand. In this game, 3 of a kind (for example) IS a valid "low" hand if there is a higher one.

The pot is split evenly between them.

Each player is dealt a single face down hole card.

Based on your hole card you ante or fold (I recommend a quarter ante for this one).

Dealer draws off the top of the deck, asks the player to his immediate left "Want it?"

Player can take or pass. If he takes, it goes face-up in front of him and the bet is his. If he passes, it goes to the next player to his left, same choices. If the second player passes, the third player is stuck with the card.

Play continues in this fashion, with a possible round of betting *with each card laid*, until every player has folded or has a full mitt of 5 cards.

Final round of betting ensues, cards are turned over, people cry.

I became infamous in my little circle for getting flushes in this game - think about it. ;)

Anyway, even with quarter bets you can rack up a nasty welt in this silly pasttime.

I invented a late-night version called "Russian Got It", which plays the same except that you don't get to look at your hole card. You have to be pretty drunk to enjoy that one. ;)

Maybe next time I'll pass the secret of "Kings and Little People" on to you - it's real wallet-hooverer, that one is.

I'd like to learn this. Can't be too much different.

What I like, and can play (but not usually so well) is Blackjack. This is a newly acquired taste over the last 2 years or so.
