Belgium says it might send troops to train DRCongo army

BRUSSELS (AFP) Nov 12, 2003
Belgium is considering sending a small military force to the Democratic Republic of Congo, a former colony, to help train its army in peacekeeping duties, the defence ministry said Wednesday.
A reconnaissance team of 22, including special forces paracommandos, engineers and doctors, was due to return to Belgium Wednesday, a ministry spokesman said.

In the light of its recommendations the Belgian government might shortly decide to send "a few dozen military personnel, maybe 50 or 60 people, from different units, for a period of a few months," to DRC he said.

"It isn't a question of training men for combat or how to use weapons -- they are just coming out of a conflict and don't need that -- but rather for peacekeeping tasks.

"The training to be given should also take into account the health situation and the state of the (country's) infrastructure."

Belgian Defence Minister Andre Flahaut visited DRC in January and hinted that military cooperation could be conducted "both in the field of training and in rehabilitating infrastructure."

Such cooperation ceased in 1990 after the massacre of 100 students at the University of Lubumbashi by government forces.

Four years later the death of 10 Belgian troops at the start of the Rwandan genocide led the Belgian parliament to recommend that no further troops be sent to its former colonies of DRC, Rwanda and Burundi.

A new headquarters for the armed forces of DRC, which incorporate former combattants in the country's five-year civil war, was established in September.

It was a Belgian colony for many years.

The average belgian soldier is 42 years old, in rwanda they ran away from people with knives and machettes when they had automatic weapons. The belgian people are cowards, not all but most and don't want to die for anything.

JUST WHO THE HELL ARE YOU!

12 Belgian Para-Commandoes got hacked to death after holding off an entire battalion for over 4 hours with a single AK-47.

Kid, I get very angry when idiots like you start showing their ignorance to the Honoured Fallen!
