Who are the best Ancient European archers?

The best ancient european archers; who are they? We all know in the world the best ancient archers were the Mongol horde. Who have used the bow for all of their existance. But who are the best ancient european archers?

    Welsh longbowmen were pretty good.

The west for the most part did not concern itself with either missile troops or cavalry like eastern armies did, they preferred well protected heavy infantry, against which archers of the time were more or less ineffective unless deployed in incredibly large numbers against an outnumbered force of heavy infantry (like Spartans at Thermopylae and Cassius in Parthia)

But if I had to say who had the best archers in the classical world, I would say the Romans.

The Ancient world ended with the fall of rome in the 6th century, so why are you bringing up the middle ages?

Maybe he means the Britons (Celts of England). Then again the Britons didn't have longbows; they had shorter bows than short bows, like most of the Celts.

Strictly speaking your question is hard to answer.

What is Europe? Geographically speaking it there is no Europe and no Asia, only Eurasia. In the Ancient world (Using Praxus's cut off point), North Africa and most of the Middle East would have been considered part of Europe (as they were Roman). So Syrian Archers would probably be the answer.

I believe he was referring to western civilization (Classical Greece, Hellenic Greece, Republican Rome, Imperial Rome, et al), I may be mistaken.

Praxus, I'll stick with Syrian Archers. The Romans used them mostly. Later the Arabs did (after Islam). They were davastating.

This question is totally opinionated. If you wish to leave an answer state your reason why they are the best (historically).
