what do you mean by greatest? If its purely size, than the British Empire wins, no question.

The British empire tops them all. Prime example: English language.

The worlds most widely spoken language.

Not really. The US nuclear arsenal and industrial might ensure our continuing hegemony.

None of the other empires had thousands of nuclear weapons.

    The Greatest Empire ever?

The Empire of Sargon of Akkad.

    Because he did it FIRST.

What about Hammurabi of Meseptomia? (However you spell that) His empire was pretty large. Plus he reorded the absolute first set of laws. King Solomon's empire in it's prime covered most of Asia and Africa. Only reason the Queen of Sheba came to Solomon was to avoid having her kingdom annexed. King Achaswerus of Persia had an empire spanning 127 countries, from India to Kush (Not sure where that is nowadays) not including colonies like the British had.

Sargon's territory was never that vast. I believe we can credit him with the idea of empire. It does depend on ones definition of an empire, though. Couldn't Menes the Great uniting Upper and Lower Egypt constitute an empire? If so, he beat Sargon by several centuries.

Of course the Klingon Empire covers a much larger territory than even the British.

Has anybody read up on the Byzantine Empire? I found it to be rather fascinating.

I did a bit during school. The Ottoman empire during the reign of Suleiman the Great was also pretty cool.
