Seems like it was a popularity contest, though Nelson was a fair choice for the top spot. I was surprised to see Montgomey so high on the list. He swiped Patton's fuel.

No surprise here considering the British looked to the seas for trade, imports, food, fuel etc basically survival and ofcoarse expanding the "Empire". Thats why there are so many monuments that have to do with the Royal Navy.

    3. The Duke of Wellington - fair enough
    4. Richard the Lionheart - almost the most useless king England ever had
    5. Sir Arthur 'Bomber' Harris - ghastly, but he did have his strategy right
    6. King Henry V - without Shakespeare almost no one would have heard of him
    7. Lord Kitchener - oh for gawd's sake!
    8. Colonel 'H' Jones - who?

    Couldn't agree more!

But I take a lot of slagging in other places for holding that view

That's funny, everything I've read says Patton was the fuel-swiper, and he stole it from a neighbouring US army

Mind you, I'd be happy to be wrong about that. Nothing could have deflated Patton's grotesque ego as efficiently as Monty swiping his fuel!

Almost anywhere academics hang out. I have great contempt for their views and find it very hard not to be rude to them

But unfortunately, I was taught to be polite when I was small.....

Good choice DG. Unfortunately today, our History is no longer taught in schools, so no wonder there are a lot of names missing off the list.
