The south will not rise again

Well, I was out today and I saw a guy driving a pickup with the confederate flag in it and a "the south will rise again" bumper sticker. It ticks me off to see these people who don't seem to remember who signed what at a certain place in 1865.

    Any thoughts?

It's not that they don't know the South lost the war, it's that they believe the South Will Rise Again

In purely economic terms, they are rising agin

    Okay, that's not fair!

Okay, people...the Civil War wasn't just about slavery (for about the 100th time). The North primarily sought to defeat the south economically since the south was thriving in the agricultural sector through slavery. The North didn't give one crap about black people, which was proven after the war, but their objective was obtained, and the South was economically destitute after the war.

Praxus is correct in his post in saying the South Will Rise Again (economically). And, we have.

P.S. And it has NOTHING to do with Viagara.

The North was jealous of Southern agricultural success? Don't confuse strategy with the reasons for the outbreak of the war.

Go more in-depth into your history sweetie.

The material prosperity of the North was greatly dependent on the Federal Government; that of the the South not at all.

Those are the reasons why the North did not want the southern states seceding the Union. Slavery was an excuse for war...the main reason was economical.

Now, the Republican Party freed the slaves, but they remain democratic-based. Haven't figured that one out yet.

    Julie,

I don't want to get in between the crossfire, but history has a nasty habit of repeating itself!

    Julie,

As a Southerner, you are giving it up so easily.

    Just not done!

Remember the Alamo and all that!

    Go, slap leather.

If your argument is that the South succeeded for economic reasons (with the continuation of slavery being the primary reason), then I'd certainly agree. If your argument is that the federal government opposed sucession primarily on economic grounds, then you need to do better than citing solely from a sucession declaration document. That is hardly an unbiased source (which speaks over why Georgia suceded) and doesn't speak one bit to the actual debate over the decision of the North to go to war.

I thought if you read what I gave you, it would clarify my position.

The South wanted to secede the Union because of the corrupt economic policies the Government was engaging in, and the South wanted NO part of it. This is iterated in those Declarations.

The North needed the South NOT to separate or it would weaken it's strategies. The Proclamation for War recited "End Slavery," "Stronger Union." blah, blah, blah. Post War, the Republicans were laughing all the way to the bank...well, except for Lincoln, he was shot, which was one small sacrifice for the North....thousands upon thousands for the South.

Does history repeat it self. Damn right it does. Iraq.
