Good stuff, fellas. (Except Soviet Horror. Whatever he posted, I'm sure it's WAY WAY WAY off the mark.)

The border. The freakin' BORDER. The line that seems to mean nothing to anybody but Rand-McNally.

Bush is an absolute FAILURE at securing the border, or any coherent policy on immigration. And as that bears VERY MUCH AND VERY DIRECTLY to our performance in and the eventual outcome of the War on Terror, I can see myself giving Bush a "C" on his 'War Leader' grade.

He's better than his political opponents, but ain't THAT the very definition of 'damning with faint praise'? I want - no, I DEMAND that my country be physically secured, to the maximum extent possible and as soon as possible, and if that means minefields and machine guns and concertina wire along the Rio Grande, FINE.

I hate pork, too, and it needs to be reigned in, SOON. But The War gets my priority. Fight it better, fight it harder.

No but he could've gotten around him in the same way Clinton got around the Russians, especially with the Canadians - "Are you going to let de Gaulleists dictate Canadian policy?"

HAH! Those guys LOVE pork! Oh, they all talk a lot about the OTHER guy's pork, but hand off of THEIR pet projects.

It's true: as soon as the People found out they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury, there is no end to it. Cut thy neighbor's subsidy - but not MINE!

I like dalem's idea IN EVERY SINGLE GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT, and EVERY SINGLE FEDERAL BUDGET ITEM. Now, I know where that would lead: inserting BS items that would be 'sacrificed' when the red line-item pens come out. But that can be dealt with in the same way: insert THIS item, lose THAT item.

We've got to get serious about the deficit.

This just isn't fair -- I can't play. Now I know how Bush feels when his party won't even support his nomination. But, I'm very much enjoying the reading here.

there are only two things that will get rid of pork.
    1) A line item veto. Not very constitutional, but very effective. (Force congress to override a veto for pork.)
    2) The prez going on national tv saying something like....." I would love to put my name on the highway bill once the following items are eliminated: One highway to nowhere, Two bridges to nowhere, and 200 million for Ted Kennedy's new swimming pool/wet bar," etc, etc, etc. No prez would ever have the balls to do that because he would make too many enemies in the trough, er, I mean congress.

After months of the "Bush can do no wrong" mantra, this thread is a breath of fresh air. This "airing out" will only lead to good things.

Thank you for your input. I'm sure we're all refreshed and challenged by your unique point-of-view.

I'm going to write a related piece to this but basically the world, perhaps unfairly, looks to America for moral leadership. Bush has been crap on the international stage as projecting himself as a moral person, you will find this laughable but Clinton is perceived as far more moral than Bush! When he has had a PR machine as capable as Rove inside America, what the hell went wrong with foreign policy, because it's not just diplomacy it's policy. America, while still having lots of goodwill, is the most isolated it has ever been internationally.

And yet we're in the most powerful position we've ever been in, internationally. Think there's a reason?

People don't like the Top Dog. I've written about this before.

How do you figure? I would say the most powerful position America has ever been in was right after WWII and throughout the 50s.

Bush has not done a good job with foreign or domestic relations.

We are the only superpower, Europe's economy is in the toilet, and we are remaking the Middle East.

...No Soviet Union occupying half of Europe.
