Cheney almost 'wishing' US be attacked
WASHINGTON DC, United States—Former vice president Dick Cheney's criticism of the Obama administration's handling of security matters suggests he wants the United States to be attacked, CIA chief Leon Panetta said.
"I think he smells some blood in the water on the national security issue," Panetta told The New Yorker magazine for its June 22 edition, released on Sunday.
"It's almost, a little bit, gallows politics. When you read behind it, it's almost as if he's wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think that's dangerous politics."
Cheney, who played a lead role in the George W. Bush administration's implementation of harsh interrogation techniques such as waterboarding, has said that President Barack Obama is making the United States less safe by banning the controversial methods and planning to close Guantanamo Bay.
Some 230 "war on terror" prisoners are still held at Guantanamo, a prison camp set up by Bush at the US naval base in southern Cuba to hold detainees captured abroad in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
In a fierce attack on Obama's security policies last month, Cheney blasted the new president's ban on rough interrogations as "recklessness cloaked as righteousness" and called his reversal of Bush-era anti-terror efforts "unwise in the extreme."
The comments by Cheney, regarded by many as one of the most powerful vice presidents in US history, were "dangerous politics," Panetta said.
Asked whether he agreed with the intelligence chief, Vice President Joe Biden told NBC's "Meet the Press" that he would not question Cheney's motives.
However, he added: "Dick Cheney's judgment about how to secure America is faulty. I think our judgment is correct."
Among the community of nations, Pakistan today stands out on one hand as a petty thug brandishing a dangerous weapon, and at other times as a concubine, sleeping with anyone willing to pay for her expensive tastes. ~ Tarek Fatah
The US's being attacked again would certainly validate Cheney's actions during his time in office. Would also likely lead to a resurgence of Republican power and further restrictions on civil liberties, two things Cheney favors.
Honestly, I think the article is presumptuous in the extreme. Being critical of an administration's defense policy does not de facto lead to a secret "I wish the U.S. would be attacked so I would be proven correct."
Where does Panetta get off putting words in Cheney's mouth? How does a newspaper have the gall to print such rubbish? Political smearing is all it is.
What if I said "Obama's fiscal policy hints strongly that he'd like the U.S. to become a Communist nation." And some paper ran with the following headline:
Obama almost wishing U.S. to become communist?
Not good.
I don't disagree. I don't believe my statement is partisan. Newspapers and media sources need to stop drawing wild conclusions, and printing headlines or leader lines that are pure, made-up conjecture.
The article could be entirely rewritten to castigate Panetta for such outlandish notions, i.e.
Panetta Claims Cheney wants U.S. to be attacked
rather than the headline as it now stands. People see headlines; they don't always read the article. Headline minus article = Cheney is a lunatic.
My sole point... sloppy, irresponsible journalism.
I'm laughing at this. It is one mans opinion. The very same man who clammed up over Pelosi calling them liars and misleading Congess. Imangine that.

definitely sloppy journalism.
ironically though, i almost agree with the sentiment. i don't think he actually wishes it, but he would definitely start crowing "i-told-you-so" soon afterward.
The human mind cannot grasp the causes of phenomena in the aggregate. But the need to find these causes is inherent in man’s soul. And the human intellect, without investigating the multiplicity and complexity of the conditions of phenomena, any one of which taken separately may seem to be the cause, snatches at the first, the most intelligible approximation to a cause, and says: “This is the cause!"

I'm seeing a former VP that is only trying to balance the rhetoric. If he does nothing then the people follow the very questionable truth of the accusations posed by many democrats whose word is questionable all in itself. Fair is fair and Bush promised to stay out of the picture and not comment on Obama's presidency but Cheyney made no such promise.

dreadnought,
the problem is that it is clear he's not really thinking of national security only, he is thinking of boosting the republicans and burnishing his own political legacy... and not necessarily in that order.I'm seeing a former VP that is only trying to balance the rhetoric. that's fine, but if cheney decides to play politics then he forfeits the position of elder stateman, with its accompanying respect and stature.

Astralis, you just described the democrats as well. They think of national security (not in the same way republicans do) but they have gone out of their way for some time to slander Bush and Cheyney every time the topic surfaces. If the Democrats think that national security should not be one of the utmost important subjects with lean clear principals then I feel we will be in for another rude awakening all at the peoples expense.
*Show me where any of them showed respect or stature during Obama's campaign. Its only going down hill from here. Attacks on former families daughters (Cheyneys daughter), womens looks (Sara Palin), accusations of the CIA lying to Congresss etc (Pelosi). These are all firsts so the gloves came off some time back and it seems ok for the Democrats to do it but once the the Republicans defend their decisions they ALWAYS seem in the wrong. Meanwhile the government is on a spending spree and will end up owning part of everything as in other countries. Part with mine and your money as well with nothing in return. A failed policy that has yet made itself clear to the taxpayers of this nation.

dreadnought,
but now you're moving parameters. my assertion is that cheney is playing politician and forfeiting a claim to stature/respect as a elder stateman as a result.Astralis, you just described the democrats as well. the people railing back at him are politicians as well, not elder statesmen.
notice that this applies to both parties. bill clinton lost a lot of respect he had gained as a humanitarian and in the elder statesman role when he started shilling for hillary.

Astralis, you know as well as I do that all of the critics never gave Cheyney any respect from the go. What makes them angry is that he is upfront about confronting their criticism and they dont like it one bit. If anybody knows the policy it is Cheyney since he lived it. None of the critics can state that only their "views" of it.
The people railing back at him supported these policies following 9-11 and now point the finger in one upmanship on the party level. Where were these voices and critics following 9-11? There werent any. Nobody cared about the terrorists being held in Guantanimo or interrigations until certain individuals started goofing off and taking pictures and then it was used as a tool to asail Bush and Cheyneys policies. Then all the ones that supported the policy hoped on their high horses and started pointing fingers at what they knew and supported as if Bush or Cheyney had anything to do with the debacle at Gitmo. Pointing fingers and criticising after gleening hind sight after supporting these policies is well for lack of a better word pathetic. They make it seem as though they were all lied to which was certainly not the case although they will flood the media and papers with it in the hopes that you will believe they were. You are literally asking a former VP to lay down and take the party beating that the Democratic party would love to give him because they supported the policy and then he had to defend this policy against the ones that as well supported it so it seemed like they knew nothing, all in the name of Bush's fault which is a term they still seem willing to offer time and time again. Its sickening and pathetic. Im looking forward to the next election.
