    Coleman-Franken recount

If I'm not mistaken, Norm Coleman has won a second term as US Senator from Minnesota, edging out Al Franken by 694 votes!

Definitely a huge relief. I was very pessimistic early this morning about Coleman's chances. Who says every vote doesn't count?

I just heard that there is a very good possibility of a recount on this race ID.

    It's not a done deal yet :

SAINT PAUL [11/05/08] - U.S. Senate Candidate Al Franken:

The Secretary of State’s office reports that all but nine of Minnesota’s 4,130 precincts have reported in. And this race is too close to call, with a margin of just about 1100 votes out of 2.9 million cast. That’s four one-hundredths of one percent of the vote. And we expect that when those final nine precincts are counted this morning, that 1100-vote margin will shrink into the hundreds.

Under Minnesota state law, we will now enter into an automatic statewide canvass and recount. It will be the first one since 1962, when I was 11 years old. I remember that year very clearly for two reasons. The recount between Elmer L. Anderson and Karl Rolvaag. And the Gophers were in the Rose Bowl that year.

And we have twice as many ballots to count this time.

Let me be clear: Our goal is to ensure that every vote is properly counted.

The process, dictated by our laws, will be orderly, fair, and will take place within a matter of days. We won’t know for a little while who won this race, but at the end of the day, we will know that the voice of the electorate was clearly heard.

There is reason to believe that the recount could change the vote tallies significantly.

Our office and the Obama campaign have received reports of irregularities at various precincts around the state. For instance, some polling places in Minneapolis ran out of registration materials. Our team has been working on those issues for several hours already, and they will continue to do so this morning as the recount process begins.

Let me be clear: This race is too close to call, and we do not yet know who won. We are lucky enough to live in a state with built-in protections to ensure that in close elections like these, the will of the people is accurately reflected in the outcome.

This has been a long campaign, and it’s going to be a little longer before we have a winner. Senator Coleman, Senator Barkley, and I have done a lot of talking. Minnesotans have waited a long time to have THEIR say. And thanks to our state’s laws, we will eventually understand precisely what they have said.

I don't doubt it. I don't think it will change anything.

Recount done -- It's Gildea vs. Hedlund for high court
It's now official -- Supreme Court Justice Lorie Skjerven Gildea's challenger in the November election will be Hennepin County District Court Judge Deborah Hedlund.

In the primary, Gildea was top vote-getter for the seat she currently occupies, receiving more than 53 percent of the vote. Hedlund and Minneapolis attorney Jill Clark finished within a half of percentage point of each other for the #2 spot spot on the ballot (Hedlund had 17.86 percent to Clark's 17.43 percent), necessitating a recount under state law. With a margin of more than 1,300 votes separating the two candidates, the gap was narrowed by just 7 votes in the recount.
We're not doing it the same way as we did it in 1962. Now got these newfangled things called computers. And with no chads.

Franken's chances aren't looking very good.

    Franken said statewide.

And I believe he got it right, for the last statewide recount in Minnesota was in the gubernatorial election of 1962.

Recount in Minnesota will start Nov. 19, and is expected to stretch into December, with more than 300 people involved :

Coleman-Franken vote recount to start Nov. 19
Posted 4:36 pm, November 5th, 2008 by Bob Geiger, Staff Writer, Finance and Commerce

Minnesotans who just can’t get enough of elections will get their wish starting Nov. 19, when a state recount of the 2.9 million ballots cast in the U.S. Senate race between Republican incumbent Norm Coleman and DFL challenger Al Franken starts.

Mark Ritchie, Minnesota Secretary of State, outlined the ballot recount process for media – some asking how little, if any, sleep they had during Tuesday night’s election coverage – during a Wednesday briefing at the State Office Building. As it turns out, the Coleman-Franken race is one of four Minnesota races that meet the legal standard to trigger a recount.

Franken trailed Coleman by 725 votes, just three one-hundredths of 1 percent, as most of Coleman’s midnight lead of 18,000 votes in nation’s most expensive Senate race disappeared overnight. Ballots cast in three legislative races also will be recounted after the State Canvassing Board meets Nov. 18. The winning margins in all three legislative races to be recounted are less than 100 votes.

Races with impending recounts are Minnesota Senate District 16, in which DFLer Lisa A. Fobbe holds a 96-vote lead over Republican Alison Krueger; House District 16A, where 99 votes separate DFLer Gail Kulick Jackson and incumbent Republican state Rep. Sondra Erickson; and House District 12B, where DFL state Rep. Al Doty holds a 76-vote lead over Republican challenger Mike LeMieur.

Ritchie said hand-counting of ballots cost 3 cents per ballot, or about $87,000 for the 2.9 million ballots cast statewide. The recount process likely will involve up to 300 people and stretch into December, Ritchie said.

“Minnesotans are anxious to know who will represent them, but they also want to be sure that all ballots are properly counted,” said Ritchie in prepared statements distributed to the media. “With the help of our county partners and the cooperation of the candidates, it is our hope that all of these recounts can be completed as quickly as possible with complete accuracy and transparency.”

    And, hopefully, four winners.
