Doctors: Ted Kennedy has malignant brain tumor

BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor, doctors treating him at Massachusetts General Hospital said Tuesday.

Kennedy, 76, was hospitalized Saturday morning after suffering a seizure at his family's compound at Hyannisport, Massachusetts.

"Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma in the left parietal lobe," according to a statement from the doctors treating the senator.

Malignant glioma is the most common primary brain tumor, accounting for more than half of the 18,000 primary malignant brain tumors diagnosed each year in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said President Bush was "deeply saddened" by the news and would keep the senator in his prayers.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she was confident Kennedy would get through his health crisis.

"Sen. Kennedy has been a fighter all his life," she said.

"He is a fighter -- a fighter for our children, for our workers, for our seniors. He is a champion fighting for health care for all Americans.

"I know that that fighting spirit will hold him in good stead in the challenge that he faces now."

Kennedy had surgery in October to clear his carotid artery in hopes of preventing a stroke.

In recent days, the powerful Democrat appeared in fine health. On Friday, he took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new maritime learning center in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

An "unlucky" family if there ever was one. I hope he recovers and spends more time away from the hustle and bustle of politics.

I hope that in his final days, he will finally confess up to what he did regarding Mary Jo Kopechne and admit that he was a hypocrite when he claim to be for the people, of the people, by the people and protecting the common man from abuses of power when he was in a position high power and used those powers to protect himself.

    Sir--

Perhaps after a long serving United States Senator is diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, it would not be the time to criticize the man but to stand by him and pray for him and his family. Whatever his past conduct or politics, he is still a United States Senator and is still deserving of a high degree of respect.

My prayers are with the Kennedy family in these troubled times.

Unlucky? I think they are extraordinarily lucky. Having that much political clout is not unlucky. President, attorney general, senators, etc.. Besides, Ted had a fairly fruitful life...being alive and free and all that jazz. The man is old enough to die of natural causes. He is is lucky he didn't have liver failure decades ago.

You have a very warped view of the world.

Yes, Ted has had a full life and could probably die satisfied. He is also worthy of criticism, though that is for another day. To describe the family as 'lucky', however, is sick.

I have never lost a sibling and I never want to. To lose four to premature, violent deaths and another to a lobotomy goes so far beyond 'unlucky' that I struggle for an appropriate word. If you think that political power somehow balances this then you have a value system I don't recognise as human.

I feel bad for the Kennedy family since I know how it is to have family members die of cancer and the agony they went though (both of my grandparents on my dad's side and my aunt died of cancer) but I will shed no tears for Teddy himself.

I am reminded of the terms "Karma is a b---h" and "you reap what you sow".

I was very taken aback by this news......this family has had it's share of trials and tribulations. Had read/heard that the prognosis for this sort of thing is that he will live up to another 5 years.

He's out of the hospital in what apparently is double quick time.

Kennedy, 76, who has been hospitalized in Boston since he had a seizure on Saturday, will likely need chemotherapy and radiation therapy to treat the glioma, a type of tumor that usually kills within three years.

    I Support Ted's Recovery

I won't go as far as my irish-catholic communist buddy from Australia but this family has been through hell. Their sense of power is well-matched by their legacy of public service. No family has so defined American history since 1960 and those roots run much further into the past.

I pray for him, though my firm political enemy, and wish him all good health and happiness for however long he's with us.

Hey, you play hard, you pay hard. The Kennedy's have partied with some very unsavory characters in their lifetimes, and partied hard.

You can't dance with the devil and expect to live consequence free. You cavort around with people like organized crime and Nazi's, well...those are nasty people who do bad things, and I tend to associate bad things to people who make those people their friends.

My family, nor anybody I have ever known, will experience what the Kennedy's have in terms of shear wealth and political clout.

The only people in the whole situation I feel sorry for are the women who have married a Kennedy man. They have been cheated on continuously, and in some cases, daily, and were treated as ornaments. Although they stayed with them for whatever reason, so I can't even feel too bad for them. They knew their situation and accepted it.

A friend of Progressivism and a friend of my nation - I don't give a shite about his domestic policies, he's a decent, honest man who helped bring peace to the North of Ireland, he deserves as much credit as Mowlam or Blair, Ahern or Adams.....I hope you pull through Senator, the thoughts of Ireland and it's people are with you :(.
