Just picked up this little factoid out in the RightRoots:

Has this ever happened before? This is kind of amazing. I'm looking at CNN exit polls at the numbers for self-identified Republicans. McCain lost self-identified Republicans by a point in New Hampshire (oddly, he won registered Republicans); he lost self-identified Republicans by 14 points in Michigan; and he tied among self-identified Republicans in South Carolina and Florida. In other words, McCain is close to the presumptive nominee GOP nominee without having won self-identified Republican voters anywhere. What an extraordinary—and utterly unlikely—path to the nomination.
Kinda backs up the points I've been trying to make re: McCain's acceptability to the party's base, and his ability to generate some enthusiasm amongst same.

Florida is a closed primary, isn't it? All of the voters on Tuesday were Republicans.

BTW, I'm going to create a pre-Super Tuesday poll on Friday, to re-gauge support among WAB members for the various Republican candidates with Thompson and Giuliani having dropped out.

Then Romney should have been their choice. Democats the NYT may be but they have the same aversion to a synthetic candidacy shaped by focus groups as many republicans do. All the candidates do it to some extent, but Romny takes the cake. It's a shame because he's bright, young and presidential. But that aside, if McCain wins the presidency, republicans by and large will be glad of it and the democrats will wish he was one of them. Of all the dumb debate points in the republican primary race, insinuating that he's a democrat is the dumbest. It's backfiring. Yet, in a odd way it could help him in the general election. The GOP has become too identified with the religious right with the American electorate, even as the religious right has begun to fragment. McCain's independence makes him seem detached from it. That could work to his advantage among democrats who are not comfortable with a woman or a minority in the White House. Bigotted as that be on their part, it's a reality that could work for a moderate republican candidate.

Matt, did you bump this thread?

I think it is a good idea to revive this since straw polls are already being taken for 2012. Can you revamp the polls so we can start voting?
