    JAD,

Let me get this straight. For all the money Beijing had reported spending, all they've got was a picture of their front man?

I doubt the main reason the Chinese would prefer democrats is that they expect to turn us into Communists. Perhaps they believe that the democrats are simply more apt to shore up the dollar, which is very much in their interest.

Democrats are already Communists these days. Not many changes left there.

Wow JAD that was a fascinating glimpse of the inside stuff that most of us are unaware of. I would really feel short-changed if my big bucks only put me on a high-speed production line However as my motto is 'A pox on both their houses' I personally am as likely to give money to a party machine as you are of crossing the Atlantic on a steam powered quadraplane airliner.

lol...recall I said the one of the things some big donors are after is to create the impression that they have inside political connections; the picture validates their claim. They then become known as "connected." They use this to advantage in several ways--building business connections, getting meetings with other lesser politicians, lending credance to their own views, influencing important people to support their projects...whatever...the list is endless.

The pictures often appear in local media and on websites, thanks to adroit public relations work.

What the Chinese would get, if he is so connected, would be insights into the thinking of influencial people the donor comes into contact with as a result of his donations and his planting of insights as to Chinese views.

Not all big donors fit that description. There's another category of truly influencial givers whose opinions do matter to politicians. The late Avril Harriman and his wife, Pamela (Churchill's daughter), comes to mind. They and their coterie of wealthy friends were big donors for years. Their support was conditioned on agreement with a candidate's views and fitness to serve.

It's just that with legal limits on individual donations, the net is cast wide with a variety of ceremonial rewards offered to those who make large donations and get others to do so as well. This leaves the door is open for Hsu-types to build the illusion of being an insider.

Bottom line, candidates and political parties are forced by campaign giving limits to pimp for bucks, and Hsu's are what they sometimes get for it...
