    The population IS the government.
That's a general misconception. It's not so in the U.S. because it is a republic.

You see, when Abe Lincoln said "of the people, by the people, for the people", he did not say the government is the people. The United States is not a democracy, but a republic. The constitution says a republican form of government, and my point is that the people and the government should be separate in this matter. Though I think the government owes no apologies either.

There are so many arguments that can pop up from there, or you could just do the simpler thing and go ahead with the formality of an apology.
I suppose all those wanting an apology could always settle for the scarifices of the hundreds of thousand of Union soldiers who were killed or maimed in that little domestic distrubance called the american civil war.

Now if the confederacy had won then, it'd be different.

Maybe the southern states could follow the cue of Virginia. But does it really make a difference to anyones life if some politician gets on a podium and say "sorry"?

    .

There is still a connection that can be made from those oppressing forefathers of yours and you guys. Did the first non-racist generation punish the racist one before it? No. Did the next one punish the one before for ignoring the CRIME of slavery? No. And so on.

After generations and generations they are no longer asking for punishments. Just that... "Yes we are sorry to vote in someone would deplore a crime that was taken place on US soil".

As I said it is much more simpler to just apologize than to argue for your reasons not to. Frankly that too has a tinge of arrogance, superiority complex and minimalization of the crime of salvery.

Asim by your logic then almost every country in the country in the world would end up apologizing to someone, somewhere, because they at some point in history they practised; or were engaged in trafficking, slavery in one form or the other.
As such an apology would be meaningless.

Slavery is a criminal offence in today's context.

I wonder what was the mindset in those times.

Any links to the history of slavery?

I don't want anyone to apologise since they are only crocodile tears. Worthless!

The only solution is let it be registered as a blot of humanity and pass it off as a bad dream and move on!

And occasionally read "Uncle Tom's Cabin", "Roots" and see the film "Armistead" or some such name to refresh the horrors of slavery and pledge to ourselves that we shall never let this type of crime against humanity happen again!

That would be worth the the trouble to our conscience rather than worthless apologies!

Should raw analytical data ever be passed to policy makers?

    Well put.
