Oh yeah, I forgot to clarify. Some tribes consume their loved ones to gain their strength. Some eat the vanquished to dehumanize their enemies. The Native Americans in the southwest have been theorized to do the latter. It's a very contraversial theory as most Native Americans want to view themselves as in harmony with nature and others and incapable of cruel behavior. But forensic anthropologists have physical archeological evidences that show otherwise.

That's funny. Many Amerindians regularly visited bestial cruelties on their captives, and long before the Bad Ol' Pale Face came to town.

Didn't you get the memo? White people are racist by nature and others are incapable of bigotry.

Anyone in San Francisco can tell you this.

I think cannibalism shows that you are firmly in touch with nature, as you view people as animals and thus fair game for eating. Can't get more in touch with nature than that.

Everyone needs to realise that at some point in their races history they were a%$holes to somebody.

Yes, but some were more a$$holes than others.

It all balances out over time.
Most races have had a good bash at genocide at some point in history.

It is unfortunate that our history is written on the barbaric acts of the past. It would be nice if we could go back and "train" our forefathers to be nicer and more humane. It would be great if we all just could not get along. But this is not the reality. This is our history, like it or not. No one should have to apologize for something that happened long before anyone currently living on earth was even a thought in someone elses mind.

Get Over It, People. It Happened. It's Over. Let's Move On. Why continue to dwell on the past and live life upset and stressed all the time. Enjoy what we have now and try to make it better for the future generations that are yet to live instead of trying to make it better for past generations that will never again live.
It's not the population that has to apologize but the government. The government sanctioned slavery, not your ancestors. So they are asking for an apology from the government. One big long living Person.

There are so many arguments that can pop up from there, or you could just do the simpler thing and go ahead with the formality of an apology.

If we (U.S.) abolished it long ago (Emancipation Proclaimation) and other countries still practiced it legal or not why should the U.S. or any individual state of the U.S. get stuck with the apology and no doubt shortly thereafter the "check"?. Because that is exactly what will happen. I dont owe anybody anything as far as this goes and neither do my family or ancestors that came here long after slavery was abolished. They worked very hard after coming from afar with nothing but the clothes on their backs and made something of themselves even know they were segregated against and they did so both repectively and responsibly So IMO "Checks in the mail".

I don't think apologies matter or are ever given sincerely, especially on such issues.

It is given merely to get rid of a irritation at best and then get back to being an old wine in a new bottle!

Therefore, getting some to apologise for slavery or even genocide is merely an attempt of gaining brownie points.

It is meaningless and a total eyewash.

I find the EU wanting to declare the Armenian massacre as genocide (basically to ensure Turkey does not get entry) or wanting anyone to apologise for slavery a pure waste of time. As some good soul had described - slavery is living death with no salvation in sight and genocide is death and be done with this cruel world!

Let bygones be bygone and start afresh and not repeat the horrors of history.
