Obama declares he's running for president
    CNN | February 10, 2007

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama stood before cheering crowds at the Capitol in his home state Saturday and announced he will seek the 2008 Democratic nomination for president.

Invoking the memory of fellow Illinoisan and the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, the first-term senator addressed thousands packed into the Springfield, Illinois, town square on a chilly day in America's heartland.

To chants of "Obama! Obama!," he told the crowd: "It was here, in Springfield, where North, South, East and West come together that I was reminded of the essential decency of the American people -- where I came to believe that through this decency, we can build a more hopeful America," said the 45-year-old Obama, who, if elected, would become the nation's first African-American president. (Watch how name recognition may be Obama's best weaponVideo)

"And that is why, in the shadow of the Old State Capitol, where Lincoln once called on a divided house to stand together, where common hopes and common dreams still live, I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for president of the United States of America."
Barack Obama - is the president of the United States.
That would be great! I hope for that...

He doesn't have my vote, but then nobody you've heard of does either.

He is the first Black (or whatever you call as per the latest PC term since I don't know and I don't want to upset anyone) to stand for President?

I wonder what are his chances.

    Nay, Brigadier.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have both campaigned to be nominated as Presidential candidates as well. Sharpton in the most recent elections before throwing in for Kerry.

Shirley Chisholm was the first, a woman no less, way back in '72. Alan Keyes in '96 & '00. There have been several black candidates comming from the Socialist party as well.

Obama is far more legitimate candidate than those two. In terms of democratic candidates, he will probably be second or third place in the race if the primaries were held right now. Whatever you say about that man, he does have the x factor that gets you excited about politics. If the election was held today, I'd vote for him (if I were allowed to vote that is).

    Thanks.

There is a Socialist Party in the US?

That's another new one for me!

    Thanks a lot.

Actually, perhaps not, as Hillary purportedly did start off as a rich conservative Republican in her youth until corrupted by a Methodist minister during the Civil Rights era.

I'm pulling for Richardson getting the nomination, not that the DNC will exercise the quality of judgment and intelligence that requires.

I don't care for the Democrats or Republicans.

Richardson from New Mexico? I'd have to read up on him.

If Hillary gets the nomination, it's the same as giving the White House to the Republicans.

The only current Democrat I'd consider voting for is Evan Bayh and he's said he isn't running.

The thing about Obama is that he is very much like JFK, that is completely unqualified for the job and the only reason anyone knows who that is charismatic. Being the first African American candidate who wasn't a complete joke helps in the media too, but I don't think he can swing a nomination, maybe as VP though.
